Greenlaning in the UK (England / Wales / Scotland / ...)
What is allowed concerning
- offroad roads one is allowed on: nothing extreme, just good and descent greenlaning.
- wildcamping: is it allowed? If partly, how/what/where (and where not)?

Any thoughts/suggestions/concerns/tops&trics/watch-out-fors/...

This year we did a 4 week trip of Italy: Alpes - Emilia Romagna - Tuscany - Dolomites.
We're looking to do something similar through the UK next year and because we want to uptimize our time, we okan our routes an sights-to-see very thoroughly. So the more info the better!

Greenlanes...
Best source is http://www.trailwise.org.uk/ but you can only see a small area unless you pay.

Some counties have online access to their definitive map, some don't. One potential starting point would be the OS maps on Bing Maps, find some nice looking trails in the area you want to go then check for detailed information on Trailwise. Key for OS maps here: https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/docs/lege...legend.pdf - the things you're looking for are the green dots for an ORPA and the green + for a BOAT. Bear in mind that the key sometimes varies between the two scales (1:50 and 1:25k).

Just because you see a track on the ground doesn't mean you can drive it. The OS maps are pretty accurate, Trailwise is more up to date but the only way to tell for definite is to go and have a look at each county's definitive map which is prohibitively tedious that I never do!

IMO there's not a lot of point at looking in Suffolk because there are next to none. There are quite a lot in Norfolk, very easy going sandy ones round Thetford and greener ones round the rest of the county.

LRO have greenlane articles every month that I cut out and keep so if you've got a vague idea what sort of places you want to go, I can have a rummage through and scan them if that would be useful.

What's the difference between a BOAT and an ORPA?

I've only been out in Thetford but is a good days out nothing extreme at all just sandy lanes, but nice. Trips were organised by Merlin off here, a true expert!

Good luck I hope you find what you need. Thumbs Up James

In regards to wild camping in England and Wales, then you can't, it's illegal (except for parts of Dartmoor) Scotland is another matter, I believe you can, but I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will reply.

/quote]

BOAT is Byway Open To All Traffic.
ORPA is Other Route with Public Access.

An ORPA is, as I understand it, one of a county's "Unsurfaced County Roads", or a UCR. It's part of the road network and listed on the "list of streets" but it's not got a hard top. I *think* that an ORPA is just what the OS call a UCR.

I have no idea what the difference between a BOAT and a UCR is, but you can drive either so long as there isn't a TRO.

Just as an aside wild camping is not illegal .if you have permission from the land owner.
I've stopped in lots of places and asked and as yet no one has ever said no.i find as long as you are honest and leave things as you found them generally you have no issues.

Green landing in the uk
It might be worth you coming up with a shortlist of places you would like to visit, then posting this on the forum and seeing if anyone can give you any guidance specific to those areas.

Wild camping is pretty much off the cards in England and Wales, however you are rarely far from a campsite.

There are no Greenlanes as such in Scotland, however I can help organise a day or two guided off-road with a company I used to work for if it helps you (on private estate land).

If you were interested in a day out in the Peak District I could help with routes/campsites or possibly meet up and show you a few routes.

If you get as far as Cumbria and the Lake District then this is a very good source of information, gives you maps showing every green lane in Cumbria
