Different Diff ratios front to rear
I have recently rebuilt front diff on my puma 110 and replaced exploded and destroyed diff centre with ashcroft atb as well as ashcroft hd ring and pinion.
I am doing the rear this week but only just realised ashcroft don't make a hd ring and pinion for p38/wolf diffs. so i am planning on keeping stock ring and pinion and installing atb
Is this difference of ratios 3.5:1in the front to 3.54:1 in the rear going to be bad news
i have heard both opinions.

I have been running this set-up (ATBs F&R, HD R&P front only) for the last 150,000 miles with no consequential problems. The difference is insignificant in the overall scheme of things.

I agree with Roel,

I don't see how the 0.04:1 ratio difference could be possible with a the small number of teeth. I highly doubt that standard puma and late TD5 110s leave the factory with different ratio differentials.

on the front it is the HD ashcroft 3.5:1 which is 28 teeth on crown wheel and 8 on the pinion,

on the rear it is the standard 3.54:1 is 46 teeth on the crown wheel and 13 on the pinion.

dosnt matter until you lock the centre diff, with the centre diff locked you will get transmission wind up more quickly not much of an issue on loose surfaces but might be on tarmac DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

No, it doesn't matter when you lock the centre diff, because (unless you are stupid) you only do this on loose surfaces.

I have run exactly this combination for over 150,000 miles, it does not cause problems and works very well.

Be aware that you may well get a pronounced whine from the HD R&P on the overrun until the diff is fully 'run in'. The HD R&P sets from Ashtrans are aimed primarily at competition vehicles where noise isn't a problem, rather than road vehicle. Mine is now silent, but whined for a few thousand miles.

That's a good option but is pricey since it is a custom diff and you need a new propshaft too.
