Im thinking about buying one of these very shortly. Does it make a huge difference would you say? My understanding is that it only makes the gear lever throw a lot less?

For first few miles that was my impression but driving it for about 50miles it grew on me and I realised how much better it was . It felt much tighter and more positive gear changing. My 90 has 86000 miles on the clock so not really a lot of miles on the gearbox . Bigger mileage gearboxes may have more slack and so you may not get the same feeling. It is worth it so go for it. Just picking up on this thread via a search so apologies for the lag since you posted. Looking at the Sychro vid on YouTube and other similar ones, some use greases and sealants when installing but Synchro didn't. Maybe this was just for speed and demo purposes. Did you seal and grease as you went? If so what did you use? I've just ordered for my 110 300TDi and plan to fit next weekend so any tips/pointers would be appreciated as I've not tried anything like this before. TIA 2016 Disco Commercial 1995 110 CSW |

I fitted one a few months ago and I have to say I love it it took me a few days to get used to it due to no longer have to have so much movement in the gear stick .
Very simple to fit the only potential sticking point is when replacing the nylon /plastic cup as the screw was tight to get out . Watch the videos and it will explain all. Terry |

Just had one fitted and driven about 20 miles with it back into Central London. Initial impressions are mixed. The gear stick travel (or throw) is much shorter and it feels tighter and more solid. However I wouldn't say it changes gear any 'slicker'. Ie it doesn't move seamlessly from one gear to another, but sticks halfway still. Will see how it feels after more use, but thats my initial impression! 2015 110 XS CSW Montalcino Red with Black Pack

Any geese wil do but a good rtv sealant should be used. |

I've just done mine. It's quite an easy job, maybe less than 30mins. Best bet I found was to leave the gaiter off and drive around the block adjusting those 2 spring locators until it's perfect. The spring tensioners are there to adjust the guide direction into 3rd gear (central on the box) whilst also taking up enough slack that the stick isn't floating about. It has to be absolutely spot on or your gearbox is going to be dreadful. Not hard to get right though, a bit of experimentation and you'll soon work out how to tweak it properly.
As far as the slick shift itself... I think it may be slightly over-hyped. The gear changes do feel a bit better, a little more solid and a shorter throw. But not totally revolutionary. If your gearbox is knackered, it still will be, just with a shorter throw (and I'm assuming due to pivot point change, and the physics of levers, you have less force behind the movement making a change technically harder?) |

Did mine Saturday - hardest part was getting the small gaiter off the gearstick

Had a slickshift fitted to my Td5 the other day and have to say that I can only agree with all the positive comments that I have read here and elsewhere. It makes a very significant improvement to the shift feel, with a more direct feeling to the gearbox and greatly reduced gear lever throw. The box feels much 'tighter' as a result. Obviously the gearbox remains exactly as it was, so you still have the awkward 2nd gear (especially when cold) and relatively poor synchros that have always been a feature of the R380 box, but it's still a great improvement. In fact I would go a far to say it is a 'must do' modification for anyone with a Td5 Defender. 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green
