Hi All
I currently have my t/box out to replace a leaking front intermediate shaft 0-ring ![]() & decided to do all the bearings & seals while in there. This is the state of the g/box output shaft... ![]() Pic is without any cleaning, but there was quite a bit of sandy crud at the lower end of the casing. Is it advisable to block the drain hole (well slit)? Do think it looks 100's though? especially after all the 'bad' posts about a non lubricated shaft. Comments appreciated... 2012 2.2 90 000kms (60% off-road/sand tracks) Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so. Yes, it's the joint under the boot at the back of your picture that fails, not the transfer box primary gear splines near the camera.
Cut the cable tie holding the seal retainer (boot), pull the seal retainer and seal out, then pop the shaft out (use a slide hammer if necessary). Then you can see, inspect, and lubricate the infamous splines. It's easier to do this if you remove the extension housing from the gearbox, by the way. |
