Sadly on a Puma the clutch spends most of its life on the way out Big Cry

50k miles is a typical life expectancy, though some will last more, some less.

Does anyone remember the similar story when someone bought the 'famous' strawberry red 90 300Tdi? Turned out to be THE ex-LR demo and the insurance paid it out as a Write Off due the damage....Think LRW covered the story in the late 90's. m

Just been on the LandRover experience course in Scotland. My main worry would be the clutch. They show you the steep ascent fail technique where you stall the vehicle in gear half way up the ascent. Then back down in reverse, starting the vehicle as you go -a pretty brutal assault on the mechanicals.
This must be done several times a day. Apart from this, a pretty normal off road drive which the vehicle is built for.
As others say, get rid of the underbody mud and if worried change all diff oils.Check the brakes and discs for scoring/wear.

Sounds to me like the LRE vehicles go through as much hard work as any MoD / SHB hire / quarrying vehicle in day-to-day use.

Change all oils, pull out brake pads and clean as necessary and get rid of the mud and I would leave it at that.

Based on your repeated questions on its history and their failure to disclose I would hope that if you front-up to the original sales guy then he should be amenable to doing at least some of this F.O.C.

If they won't then I would take my business elsewhere.

They are built for this treatment - even the failed hill climb & reverse.

I would have thought that this was material information to disclose especially as you asked the question.

Independent of servicing, the bushes and suspension will have had a harder life than a typical low mileage defender.

I don't see that the failed hill climbs is that terrible is it?
It's just stalling the vehicle, so everything is moving slowly and whilst the engine will be under full load it's also stalling so "full" isn't that much. Then you're starting it in gear backwards which is probably less strain on the starter than usual because it's got the weight of the vehicle helping it.

There are things that make me wince more than practicing failed hill climbs Smile

Hi
Been to a few driving days with Land Rover, the vehicles go through thorough mechanical inspections and services on a weekly/ daily basis. I would look at the vehicle as being a piece of history thats been looked after. Something to be cherished

So unless the vehicle has regularly been waded in crud that is deeper than the breather height (which is unlikely given how carefully the LRE courses are engineered for effect), why on earth would "every box" contain silt? They're sealed to keep the oil in, at least on the whole, and the dirt out. The vehicle has been doing what it is designed to do.

I would probably thoroughly flush the chassis and box sections to get any remaining mud out, though.

Which would you rather buy, an ex-LRE vehicle with a history of supervised usage, dealer servicing, and probably low mileage, or a totally unknown quantity which could have been ragged mercilessly and not serviced, then cleaned up for the forecourt? Myself, I'd take the LRE vehicle anytime.

Because they are Land Rover seals and it is a relatively inexpensive precaution. Very Happy HR064 Hampshire and Berkshire 4x4 Response

OV, OU, OW are all JLR factory registered cars so it is looking like it could have been a Experience vehicle. Not the end of the world though as I would have expected them to be fairly well maintained as any breakdowns would be damaging for the brand.

I worked for the Land Rover Experience in the South East at Ashford for 10 years until 2012 and during that time all our cars were leased from Land Rover and most of them up until 2010 had BT, BO, BP and BX registrations. All were silver as it was the easiest colour to keep clean.

Every day they were checked over and jet washed at the end of each day so I can confirm ours were looked after. I was the instructors job to look after the car whilst in their charge. Cheers Don.

Personally I would prefer a LRE Defender rather than a poorly maintained and thrashed private one.
