Well I went to the factory to have a vip look at the Disco5.

Awesome to look at but its lost that rufty tufty feel Big Cry

I have a feeling that the vehicle that JLR will be bringing out in a few years will also be a 'soft roader' just like the D5

Interesting stuff Andrew Thumbs Up

Also quite interesting to see the amount of anticipation for the next "Defender" from the Disco Guys Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

I'm really disappointing with the new D5 - the D4, all the seats go completely flat and i can get a double airbed in there and have slept comfortably in there once. The D4 is practical... The new D5 looks like its trying to compete with a shoddy Q5 or Q7 hearse Big Cry

They go flat in the D5 too, I understand.

Hard to tell from the photos online but it does look like they fold down but not 100% flat. Maybe a 5 to 10 degree angle.

If that is the case, I agree a backwards step.

From what I read, there are 2 fold down positions, one that have a slight angle and one that goes flat

My biggest gripe about the D5 (and a lot of other modern cars) is the width of them. One of the Defenders best features is how narrow it is, and slab sided, which is great on the country roads where I live. In many ways a (current) Disco would suit my needs better but I just don't like how wide it is. 2 X modern vehicles on a Country road with sticky out trees either side makes me pucker..

I realise that cars don't feel their size when driving them (I do loads of miles in a 2.35m by 7m motorhome) but the width is fixed no matter how wide or otherwise it feels to drive.

I hope the Defender replacement doesn't suffer bloat too....No, actually, probably don't care as my Defender isn't going anywhere anyway Rolling with laughter

It amuses me when people say "how can you drive such a big vehicle" and refer to my Defender.
If you compare it to a Ford Focus, a 110 gains something like 4" wheelbase and 4" in length compared to the estate, and it's a couple of inches narrower.

Then you look at a Ford Ranger or the older Nissan Navara and they're ginormous!

I second your comment about the width of modern cars. The buying customer is getting wider (and taller) too, but the cars are far wider than they need to be. The ever "wider" customer also has to climb in and out of the car, in car parks, that generally arenīt becoming more spacious.....

Although the ergonomics of a Defender are from the fifties, itīs skinny (flappy) doors and narrow girth make it easy to emerge from.... Thumbs Up Thumbs Up 1998 Tdi 90 SW,
