Out of interest and tangentially on topic...

Love the look, and also can understand the appeal on the road, but with all other things being equal - what differences can you expect with 18" off-road? Especially mud/MT, I'm dealing with mud often. (Or is A/T more realistic?)

I can make some reasonable guesses but obviously it's better to hear from your real world experience Thumbs Up Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

I've not been in mud, but I'd assume much like a tractor, that if you gave larger wheels and an appropriate tyre which does its job, that they should at least match, if not out perform an equivalent width 16" wheel? Tyre width in mud, which wouldn't necessarily differ between 16" and 18" would gave a greater influence. As for others off road areas, which I have done, (gravel tracks, grass, etc) no noticeable difference. Again, I suspect the tyre would be the main concern in struggling on any of those surfaces before rim size played a factor. Ultimately, if they underperformed over their 16" cousin, I can't imagine Bowler using them for their Challenge Series? Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've been told many a time for off-road stick with 16", I suspect mainly to allow the 'deeper' tyre to protect the alloy more. Also able to deflate more.

My opinion is Anthracite all the way, for me I like the contrast between alloy and tyre. I sometimes think black alloys get lost in the tyre (when clean). Black alloys on black Defender look good when all black. But all totally personal preference. Thumbs Up James

We did the LR trek in May last year, there was still lots of snow lying and the ground was soft and muddy, we had no problem getting around on the 18in BFG ATs fitted to,the 110 Thumbs Up

I love the look of those wheels Smile
I had the twisted 18's on my 110, and think the wider tyres really suit the 110. The BF's were pretty good at handling most things I threw them at, including plenty of snow.
Then only issue was the amount of snow / mud that got deposited up the side of the Defender - mind you it looked great Surprised

Performance of different dimensions of tyre:

Tall or narrow tyres have a lower rolling resistance, wide or short ones have a higher rolling resistance.
Traction is dependant on the length of the contact patch, for a given pressure and load a narrower tyre will have a longer contact patch forwards/backwards but a narrower contact patch side to side.
When cornering, there is a tendency for the tyre to come away from the road on the inside edge. The shorter the sidewall, the less it will do that. The wider the tyre, the less it matters.
It is useful to be able to lower tyre pressures when driving on poor surfaces. This lengthens the contact patch (more traction and more flotation), allows the tyre to better conform to the surface (more grip) and also provides a more comfortable ride. The lower profile the tyre, the less you can do that.

So, for most conditions off road you will have better performance from tall, narrow tyres running low pressures because that gives you maximum traction. A lower profile and/or wider tyre will give you better cornering performance.

For what it's worth I have witnessed that in person with my Defender and with other vehicles, and we also run narrower tyres on our ploughing tractor compared to our top work tractors (traction isn't the only reason for that it has to be said). Edit: I'm running 7.50R16 tyres and have the Gwyn Lewis mud flaps. Despite wading through goop on a regular basis I've never had a cleaner car.
