2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Chawton White
General Shocks and Springs Questions
Just wondering what comes stock on a 110 SW. On my last truck I had put genuine HD springs and bilstein shocks as my original stuff was worn out. I find on my new truck with stock suspension the ride is much stiffer than the bilstein set up.

Is it the springs or is it the shocks?

not sure whether it is the same on a 110 but my 90 came with HD springs, changed them for standard road springs which made a huge difference.

the following info might help you work out what you have on your 110


LHD 110 2 seat utility, 5 seat station wagon and 5 seat crew cab (3050 Kg)
Front - Driver's side NRC 8044 White/white
Front - Passenger side NRC 8045 Yellow/yellow
Rear - Both sides RKB101111 Purple/brown

Thanks for the info. I am guess its the shocks not the springs that make the ride a nightmare.

Without driving it I would say it is the shocks.

I am guessing the problem is that it is solid when you hit short sharp bumps in the road? Like there is no give in the suspension at all?

I went through the same thoughts as yourself - Finding the stock setup on my USW much too bouncy and harsh.

My mods:

- Bilstein shocks all round. Gave massive improvement in ride quality and suppleness.

- Swapped the '3500kg' brown/purple (colour code) original rear springs, for '3050kg' green/white springs as fitted to the CSW. To be honest, there is just marginal improvement in ride (although it's now pretty good, now everything's bedded in and settled down). Other downside is these springs are 2.5cm longer than the brown/purple ones. My truck looks a bit 'a*se in the air'.

So, I bit the bullet, and called Extreme 4x4.

The chap there, Colin, was extremely helpful, and once I'd told him what I wanted to use the 110 for (70% on road, generally lightly-laden, 20% towing, and 5% off-road/greenlaning, he's come up with a spec for me which should be softer but not too soft, plenty stiff enough to cope with towing and a medium weight in the back, and with a level-ish ride height (about 10mm lower than the brown/purple springs). These have been custom made, but for the same price as their standard springs.

Will let you know how I get on once these are fitted next week. He also suggested beefed up anti-roll bar on the rear, especially for towing, but sensibly suggested changing things in increments!

Ive just fitted terrafirma all terrain shocks on my 90 and its made a difference. Handles big bumps totally different, so much better and smoother. Pot holes are still a bit of a bang as you go through but its better. Got a new set of bushes to fit all round and then im thinking of a few mods to help things out a bit more. I will keep you posted!
