Defender 2nd row seats unsafe for kids ??
Anyone know if it's possible to fit TD5 Disco seats into a Defender? I have 3 kidswho all need car seats, and the centre seat is not safe with just the lap belt and car seat. The later disco ones have an over shoulder belt. Or is it possible to source Puma seats from LR? Anyone else had this problem?

Got 2 sons, 2 & 6, so use 1 car seat & 1 booster in my 110DC.

In the process of replacing the 60/40 low back standard seats with Exmoor Trim individual hi backs - will give elder son something for his head to lean on other than the rear window.

In addition, replacement seats recline (do not fold forward) so can still get in behind, and they are set slightly further back so I do not get a boot in the back from younger son.

But an easier solution to your problem - fit a 3 point belt in place of the lap belt. Proper fixing of the belt reel & the upper point will solve your problem instantly. 2001 TD5 110 DCPU in Bonatti Grey

hi Napoleon,

I looked into this on my td5 and yes you can fit them but you will need to do a bit of work on the 40% seat, its about 3cm too wide. The 60% seat is fine. You will need to make up a bracket/anchor plate for the rear fixing and then make the changes to the 40% seat:

I stripped down the 40% seat, took the foam from the frame and then cut off 3cm, this takes the foam back to the edge of the frame, so not changes to the structure or strength of the seat. The tricky bit would be to reupholster the seat cover to make it look good.

In my td5, i fitted a set of puma middle row seats, have a look at td5 threads.

see http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic330.html

give me a shout if you need more information

cheers

I have a dog guard fitted between the rear seats and the rear load area. Im unsure if this provides any safety protection to a rear passenger with regards to acting as a headrest?

Ive often thought about attaching some kind of pads to the dog guard to act as headrests.

A different child car seat might be an easier/cheaper option in the medium term - I have a Kiddy Infinity Pro (came top in Which? tests), which is a bit different from most - it has a large padded area in front of the child's chest area and both parts of the belt ie. the lap part AND the shoulder part across this. This means the shoulder part doesn't actually do anything ie. it would work just as effectively with a lap belt.

Difficult to describe in words but if you look at one you'll see what I mean. Longer term when they've moved to booster seats you'll still have the same issues but you might have a Puma by then!

Thanks for the advice. Wow that multimac looks great but not cheap!!! (although what price safety etc etc) Budget does come into it. Liveridge said they could source the Puma seats at around 1500 quid. Have managed to get a 60% disco rear seat with integral over shoulder seat belt off e bay for £50 so will try to get that to fit as a first option. Could be quite a saving!!! "What could possibly go wrong?"

I paid £450 for a set of puma middle rows, almost complete, cost me about £100 more for the additional bits, from JV LIKE LR dealers in Wales.
