Hi Lambley,
I had the same issue and bought a 3 gang trailed mower to go on the back of the landie. 7ft Cut and doesn't need any power as the rotation of the wheels drives the gearboxes and the cylinders.
Works fine as long as you don't try and use it when the grass is really wet.

Something like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ransomes-gang-mo...35e9ed8dae

You can get a set for £500 or up to £2500 for a fully refurbed set.
I prefer the ones with the steel wheels rather than tyres, particularly if the grass is a bit rougher.

Cheers Camelman, that looks like a plan! I'll keep my eyes out for something along those lines.
I think a tractor would be very handy and great fun but a bit of an overkill for us really, the owner of the house we're buying has got a tractor mower he wants to sell but I've not had a good look at it yet, but could be handy if the price's right.
I'm also looking for an old 90 pickup at the moment as a bit of an excuse to SWMBO Whistle

I did succumb to the tractor bug as well unfortunately and got a '62 Massey 35, I use that to pull the mowers if weathers good Smile
If your looking at a set of gangs, ideally get one that has had the blades sharpened recently. It costs around £75-90 per cylinder (x3) and around £30 per bottom blade.

I bought a decent set last year that had been used / maintained by a local cricket club but needed the blades sharpening.
Total cost with the refurbishment was around £900 but now the finish is spot on.

The advantage of the ransomes (and some others) is that they have rollers on the back so you end up with nice stripes Smile

With this set up can mow an acre in around 10-15 minutes.

Depends on the land. Flat & good shape (e,g. square or rectangle) then a towed mower behind the 90 would work. But you've only got a mower.

5 acres is perhaps a bit small to invest in a tractor, but it's too big for a ride on. Note that ride on's mow grass, not top. If you have sheep you want to top, not mow. You need to leave a few inches for the sheep to eat. It's short enough for the dogs, long enough for the sheep.

If you have somewhere to store it, you can't go wrong with a tractor mind. Useful for all sorts. This was mine until recently

Sheep done properly request a lot of commitment and effort especially once you get bitten by the pride bug and start showing them. Alternatively and what you really want is a unimog with a 3 point and pto as it's much cooler than a tractor as you can go out playing on the road and lanes and quarries and all that. It will also work mowers and hedge cutters and a tonne of other exciting things. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

I have a ransomes batwing up for sale soon. It needs a it of attention as the head went a few years back and the mechanic started to rebuild but never finished it. Sat in the corner for a while.

Gangs are ideal however need to be looked after reground etc so can be expensive. I would stick with rotary as a good all rounder, flails now are super but hold there price secound hand.

I used to tow triple Ransomes gangs behind a 110 too, just hitched up with a jaw-type hitch on a Dixon Bate adjustable towbar. Ideal for keeping the field lovely and tidy, stripey too! Not much good for sheep though, and require a fair bit of maintenance every now and again as others have said. No extra petrol needed for a donkey engine though.

I appreciate this is an old thread but I've been spending a lot of time on the quad towing the flail recently! The quad is a Honda Fourtrax 420ES and the flail is a 1998 Wessex AF120. The pictures don't show how steep the field is and the quad makes light work of it. I hate bracken and thistles.

That Wessex is the same year as mine but mines the wider 180, brilliant bit of kit.

Yes I looked at the newer ones, Logic etc. and decided that I couldn't go too far wrong with an older Wessex. Great build quality, Vanguard engine and heavy duty metal work. The only benefits I can see of the newer kit are reduced weight and on quad controls.
