LPG injection for diesel engines ??
Just been talking to my neighbour who is back from Australia. Apparently someone over there is playing with a small injection of LPG alongside diesel and getting much better mpg.

Anyone come across this before ??

Didn't know anyone did it for MPG - I thought most did it for cheap Ooomph!

IIRC Malcolm Wilson's lad used to use a Freelander TD4 with LPG injection for reckying Thumbs Up

Ah so it's not an urban myth then ... they are using lpg to extend the range of an expedition truck.

The mpg claims were impressive but did involve beer ....

Will ask who did it and if there is more detail ...

It is more common on big diesels. Trucks and marine application.

Prins make a system and I looked at it as a transport manager when I used to manage a small fleet of vans .

I never pursued it as the cost savings weren't there to justify it. I did get several petrol/dual fuel vehicles on the road though. HR064 Hampshire and Berkshire 4x4 Response

As JJ says it is more common on large trucks as the benefits are greater.

Basically diesel is substituted by LPG at a rate of up to 25% depending on the engine's operating conditions. Vehicle with low MPG and that operate at constant speed, ie 44 tonne trucks on long distance motorway journeys achieve the best results / savings as opposed to light vehicles on stop start journeys. However I believe that Mercury Fuels (the vehicle converter) are developing something for the smaller diesel vehicles such as the 3.5 tonne van.

Also the later Euro version engines are the best to convert as the ECU on these can be programmed to give optimum results across the full range of operating conditions and it prevents the engine from running too hot.

More information on this can be found on the Calor Gas website and you will find a YouTube case study which outlines the results that they achieve from their LPG/Diesel trucks.

Allisport LPG injection
I fitted the Allisport kit to my 300tdi 110 about 8 or 9 years ago. Still in use and working perfectly. One 26litre tankful lasts about 1000 miles. Power increase is about 10%, mpg about 33 with, compared to 26 without. Exhaust gas measured at MOT, is about 50% cleaner with LPG. In use now for about 35,000 miles.
