Totally agree, all the new models look the same bar scale.

It's the same with many manufacturers, I can't tell the BMW range apart...but that doesn't bother me as I think they're terrible cars anyway. But Land Rovers need to be distinctive. It used to be very clear what a Defender, Disco and Range Rover were, now they're just blurring into each other.

I'm hoping the new Defender is a different style (if it ever arrives) and will be a suitable replacement for my D4.

Cheers

Simon

I saw one in person yesterday at the Holkham Food Fair and it's just like a Disco 4 sized version of the Disco Sport. Massive lump of plastic in front of the front tyres to get stuck on everything and damaged.

I have to say I only noticed it because it was camouflaged. I'd have walked right by trying to find where my boss had hidden the car if not.

I still can't help thinking now the D5 is becoming squatter like the rest of the range, the new Defender will be more like the D4 shape? Now certain the Defender name will be buried. James

I'm still confused as to where the discovery sport fits into the range?

It's not much bigger than an evoque and lower spec than an RRS.

What's the point?

I bet the D5 is going to be smaller than the D4 which, to me, cancels any point in buying one

Walking round it it seemed like the same size as a D4 just less boxy and more rounded.

Disco four would be my second favourite to the Def. but obviously still not the same character.

I wouldn't be so convinced about the passing of the Defender name, although I accept that many will never see anything that follows as being a true Defender.

However, and answering Languedoc's query, Land Rover has a clearly defined brand identity document that details Range Rover as being 'Luxury'; Discovery as being 'Lifestyle' and Defender as being 'Utility'.

This document came out prior to the demise of Freelander, setting the tone for the current spell of product development, hence there being various versions of RR (and more in the pipeline) the current concentration on things Discovery related and the impeding development of Defender replacement.

It has a chassis number, components have been tested - I'm just somewhat frustrated that it's not here and on the market right now!

Finally, there are those who argue that Land Rover is deserting its roots, turning its back on the heritage - in truth, the business (and, yes, it is a business) is simply evolving to offer some pretty good vehicles and do so in an increasingly competitive market place.

As to the 'heritage', every vehicle that is launched has the Land Rover DNA running through it - hard to believe, possibly, but even the Evoque Convertible has been tested in an off-road environment before you and I get our mucky mitts on it and I'm confident that the basic premise of being able to put a horse trailer on the thing and STILL get off the field will endure for a long time to come...

This happens every time land rover bring out a new car. Most of the problem with land rover are the enthusiasts that own them im afraid.

Land rover has lost its way a little and could do better in some areas...but im sure the D5, which is different when you see it and new Defender will sell really well.

The only thing for me is a) price, b) loss of the more practical/affordable car in favour of luxury brand...some of them are getting too big too

And in answer to the Disco Sport question, the disco sport is the freelander - just think of it like that and it slots in perfectly.

Whats worrying, ive got a 3 door evoke at the moment, a car i dont like the styling of etc but its not half bad in the latest iteration - engine, infotainment etc - now thats worrying (anyone got a comb and scissors?) Mike

Funny that, Mike. My wife's daily driver is a 3 door Evoque, she loves it! It's not that bad a vehicle, good mpg, comfy interior good standard equipment but I still prefer my D4 and Defender. (something for the weekend sir) Rolling with laughter Cheers Simon

So it appears it is the new D5?
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/cars/news/new-2...-revealed/

Article mentions that it's pushed 'more upmarket, closer to RR etc'.
So not exactly 'lifestyle' then, and now they don't do 'utility' either.

I'm thinking LR may never do utility again, but IMO they desperately need a 'lifestyle' option, at a more affordable entry point.
The original Freelander hit the spot quite well, with it's removable roof, plastic wheelarches etc.
I hope there is one in the pipeline.
And I hope it looks nothing like a jelly-mold copy of the current range.

With the contempt they treat their current Defender owners with I would not be surprised if they do drop it all together.

In fact, I would rather they did.

At least that way we will still be able to find parts and pictures and articles easily without being misdirected to the modern Skoda yeti alike. Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

This picture says it all! Discovery 1-4 you can see the evolution of the model and then the 5 is a Euro blob

It's a shame that Land Rover are moving away from the Utility market. The D4 I've used for work has been the best all-round vehicle I've driven. Equally at home polished up for collecting clients from the airport, or crawling up the side of a mountain for a photo/video work (and having one of the guys stood on the roof).
