i've been fighting my dealership over a couple of issues (i'm sure you can all relate) and now that i'm out of warranty land rover sent a regional tech guy, had to wait about 2 months but he turned out to be a nice guy with a rodieshan accent, the gear box was not that much of a problem when he drove and the backlash he said was as it should be for the vehical with 42K on the clock, but he did say he wanted to have a look at it on the ramp, 30 minutes later and he said i need rear half shafts the flange end thingy? on both sides and the pinion seals on both diffs had gone, plus they need to strip down thw o/s swivel join as there is excesive movement in it, and thats after it being worked on twice in november by the chuckel brothers!!!!!!
the moral of the story is even a guy who has worked around africa with land rover for 30 years (we had a nice chat)says its normal backlash can then find these issues, please nobody take the "its normal backlash" answer from a guy who trained on fords and citroens and untill he pulled on land rover overalls was doing oil changes on vauxhalls and toyotas, push for an expert.
and takes a deep breath and relaxxxxx.......
