oil leak bell housing 2.2tdci and oil pump recall
Hi Everyone,
I am looking into in the purchase of a 2.2 tdci defender 2013 <out>, it all seems generally good save for slight oil leak apparently for bell housing drain hole. Has anyone come across this issue and do you think it would be best to go elsewhere with my cash?
Further to the above it seems this engine is in the number range which qualifies for a oil pump modification/replacement could this have anything to do with the above.
Any advice gratefully received.

If it is engine oil that is leaking (rather than hydraulic fluid or gearbox oil) the cause will be a leaking crankshaft rear main oil seal. This seems to be quite common on both the 2.4 and 2.2 TDCi and, provided that is is a very minor leak (more of a seepage than a leak really) is probably not an issue. If the leak is bad enough to mean that it is dripping then it should be fixed (engine or gearbox out job). it will not be connected in any way to any issue with the oil pump.

It would be worth checking the service record to find out if the oil pump recall has been done. If I remember correctly the consequence of the oii pump failure was catastophic engine damage, so it is unlikely that you would fail to notice if this had happened.

A check with Land Rover will reveal if the oil pump has been done, you'll need the VIN.
The leak could be the sump as they are replaced as part of the recall but unlikely IMO.

I'd suggest that the gear box has been overfilled on a change as another possible cause.
The refill should be 2.2Ltr, not to the plug as some workshops do leading to the leaks.
Is there a service history of a gearbox/drive train oil change and quantities of oil charged? Cheers,

Thanks Blackwolf and Alien for taking the time and trouble to add your thoughts and opinions its really helpful Bow down I am not sure how this will all pan out I may walk away from this one as they don`t seem keen on cutting a reasonable deal.Our favorite marque is getting rarer but I am sure that another good one will turn up sooner or later if I do.
