Stalling on warm start?
Hello,

A 2011 110 Puma, done 45k miles. Recently it's been stalling on a semi-warm start. If I drive it from cold for a short distance, say a mile or so, and park up and pop into a shop for a few minutes, on re-start the engine starts and ticks over for a few seconds then stalls. It does this up to half a dozen times then starts up and stays running and I drive off like usual. It doesn't seem to do it from a cold start or a fully warmed up re-start and seems to only do it on a semi-warm start.

It did it a few months back and using my rubbish mechanical skills I decided to top up the cooling system and the problem went away although that could have been a coincidence.

Any ideas on what it could be? I'm thinking there must be a sensor somewhere that tells the engine how rich to run the engine at a certain temperature and it's not working properly.

Thanks,
Andy.

when you say it stalls, does it cut out like you've switched it off or does it judder and make nasty noises like something's causing it to stop but it doesn't really want to?

Is there any oil in the coolant and any coolant in the oil?

If your having to top up the coolant where is it going? May be an indicator of a cracked head or block. Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

It stalls like you've turned it off. It runs for long enough for the oil, alternator and other warning lights to go off.

By topping up I mean add more water to the reserve tank, it's always settled so the level is just below the fill line so I added a bit more just because being below the line triggered my inner mechanic. Of course, once it's gone through a heat cycle it's back to where it was but it seemed to be relevant. The coolant isn't going anywhere and the oil is clean (by clean I mean "needs a service black"). The engine has good power so I'm pretty sure it's not cylinder head or head gasket. Pretty sure it's not fuel filter either because it has full power.

In fact, the car seems to be fine in every other way. It just stalls on semi-warm start. It bothers me because it's MOT time in October and I don't want it doing that while they're trying to get it to the test area.

What's DTC?

Hello,

I haven't got a code reading device so I don't know if there are any codes. There are no warning lights on the dash so if there are codes it's not bad enough to light the warning light.
