i have no experience of a Puma auto but:
it is something i have thought about but i would only consider it with a remapped vehicle. As far as the conversion goes then a compushift box and either supplied and self fit or supplied and fitted by Ashcrofts is the only route i would consider. With respect to the gear ratios why not ask Dave A. he will know the lockup ratio for an hp22 and hence your final drive can be worked out. i would of thought with a std HP22/24 you would have similar ratios to a disco td5 auto less the difference for the tyre size. It is after all std hp22/24 box through a puma 1.2 T box (which is near as damn it the same ratio as a D2 T box.). top end you would prob have more revs in lockup for any given speed over your current 6th gear equivalent. I had a lift in a 90 auto it was rubbish dont think these types are suited to it ,think it was a disco 2 box.

why's that Mick. was it a standard auto or a compushift? JST - thanks for the info i see you point about compushift and your thoughts on the ratios makes sense. fuel consumption does'nt really bother me as i don't do much; mores the pity in one sense Just been looking at the Ashcroft site again. 2 different prices quotes so I will have a chat with them if I am pretty certain I want to make the conversion, don't want to waste their time. Can;t really explain it but from what i can remember it was done at ashcroft and it was very noisy and just didnt seem right i have had autos before D3-D4 and VW transporter autos my advice would be to have a go in one 1st

thanks, i driven loads of different autos including Disco's, RR's, FL's[1&2] and many many 2wds. some do feel quite different. as you say if it seems a 'goer' I'll have to drive one. BM52 |

i'm collecting parts to auto my td5 90.
i also have a D2 auto, the problem with the standard set up is that the torque converter doesn't lock up early enough meaning the td5 engine can rev to over 3000 rpm before shifting up. The gearbox as standard is ok unless going for big torque ala hstage 2 td5 spec. Ashcrofts do an uprated torque converter for the td5 auto box, hp22e. i have already bought one as they can be alittle thin on the ground. the compushift is relativey easy to fit and, on a td5 at least, the R380 manual box is the same length as the HP22e box so no altering of props, mounts etc. Dave Ashcrofts a nice guy, very hepfu and informative. I believe they have a puma auto that you can ride in to get a feel for it. Personally i can't wait to auto my 90. |

I made install it limps automobile of Ashcroft by a friend who has to create a garage Land rover on Perpignan (Cataland66) and it for 1 and a half month. I use the def for my work, office(desk) in Marseille, I am approximately 500 km a week among which 65 % in town, which of the happiness with this limp and the compushift. Decrease of the noise and I think of the temperature of the tunnel. In town it is very pleasant, one limps automobile which, and on any ground there is no difference, even on zones of motocross, brief great satisfied, single snag, one on 10 % consumption, I go to see by deleting the catalyst if there is one better. |

The Ashcroft conversion is a superb conversion, ive driven it and the drive is fantastic.
They are also a gearbox specialist as the site says with many, many years experience in all landrover transmition and have made the selection of parts according to their best knowlage. the only way to go is Ashcrofts in my opinion, they cant be bettered.
an auto on a tdi is not well suited (from my experience) it just doesnt have the torque to maximise use of the box. on a td5 it is good, no reason why it would be the better on a Puma. mine locks up at about 2500rpm HP24 on a TGV. I am sure I have seen someone on the forum with an auto, I seem to recall it was someone with a disability who had a conversion done, worth trying the search option... Disco 3 gone but the memory of the bills remain...

not sure if anyone is still following this, but i am the chap with the auto defender. i have a SVX with an ashcroft conversion fitted, although it was actually done by JE Engineering. the control for the box is a power train control systems unit, which means you can plug yur laptop in and change how and when it shifts. generally it is very good, although i have problems in winter with it sticking in park if temp drops below -5. if your interested in knowing more drop an email with tel number and i wil give you a call. keith Cheers keith puer claudius |

thought JE would use ashcrofts kit.
Surely the ger selection issue would be down to oils rther than the control unit? any pics! |

out of interest did you have any issued when you went to insure the 'mod' ?
i'd imaging not many insurers would know about an auto defender let alone insure one? BM52 |
