Overdrive
I think I am at a crossroads, I have a 200tdi converted Defender 90, 1990, ith a rear seat installed. I want to use it more on the motorway and have started to drool over 110's.

However I have worked so hard to get my 90 to my spec I am reluctant to pass on.

The question is, if anyone can help me, has anyone fitted an overdrive to their Landy, was it beneficial and which one is the best, where did you get it from and are they expensive.

I have searched and Roverdrive seems to be a good unit but cannot find a price or outlet in the UK.

The 110 Incling comes from maybe wanting more room and maybe a younger unit.

Send Ray at Global Roamer and email, and he'll respond to you with pricing and shipping to your location.

Let me know if you have contact issues, he's a 10 minute drive from me, I could go over and get the ball rolling for you. it's a Landrover thing...

I have the original Fairy overdrive fitted to the 86" and one 80" and wouldn't be without them. They utterly transform the driving experience.

Hi,
Have you considered fitting a discovery transfer box, instead of the overdrive? A lot cheaper.
It will cruise at 5-10mph faster or be a bit quieter and more relaxed at the same speed. No extra mpg though.
I have a TD5 with the higher ratio box, it was great with 32" tyres, but changing to 33" killed it a bit. A remap is needed to get some acceleration back. The t'fer box change isn't recommend for towing heavy trailers either.

I also have a 110 2.2 tdci, much better still for motorways. The long wheelbase smooths the bumps out.
Drive a good example of the type of 110 you'd like, to help deciding.

I had a Td5 90 fitted with GKN Overdrive. Great thing to have, however once it got a few years old I had all sorts of electrical problems (won't get that with the Roamerdrive as it's mechanical... and the only one available new!). Gave up trying to get it working properly again so ditched it and had 1.22 Disco transfer gears put in.

That made it far more reliable and drove a lot more civilised and better suited a tuned up Td5. However, a stock engine especially a 200tdi may struggle to pull the gears up hills etc and will have a bad impact on acceleration. Wouldn't do it if you do much towing.

I then changed to a TDCi 110, and you have best of both worlds really with the 6-speeder. Pete

Yes I changed to 1.22 and makes sense, only pull a very small caravan but struggle on hills. Going to fit an uprated inter cooler next week. Would like to maybe part x for a 110 maybe and the model you refer to seems to fit the bill😀

I have Discovery 2 TD5 with standard gearing (= 1,22 transfer box) and 235/85/R16 tyres. Car is heavy loaded (3200kg) for trips around Europe. Without remap it is unusable, with remap it drives nice. But it is a bit clutch heavy when starting to move in HI gear. Compared to totally standard Def 130 TD5, without any modifications, with 1,41 transfer box, with the same size tires, the Def is much nicer to drive up to 90km/h speed.
Look at the Ascroft web, there is transmission calculator, and make a few calculations of your car, starting with standard gearing.
For me, with Disco 2 the solution is to change stock diff gears wit 3,54 ratio to some a bit slower ones - wit 3,8 ratio from KAM. And for Def 130 I have the overdrive prepared with 255/85/R16 tyres and again 3,8 ratio diff gears. So in HI gear I will have a bit slower gears for moving on small roads aprox. up to 80km/h, and with overdrive for bigger roads and higher speeds. With remap of course. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufĂnek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Gkn or similar give the best of both worlds but Again I gave up on the gkn as its electrical problems and ability to leak oil more than the vehicle it was attached proved to much. Went to disco transfer box and all was fine. It had a heavy duty rakeway clutch in it and very highly tuned and towed fine. If you are towing a lot you may struggle with disco gearing depending on tyre size and state of tune

Yes but you need to order the correct model.
For Disco 2 Transfer cases you need to order the Roamerdrive model DSQ. The "Q" has to do with this model is compatible with LT230Q transfercases. These have 38 gears teeth.

In my Defender 90 TD5 I have a Disco 2 LT230 42D, G prefix (1.211 HI ratio). She also has 4.11 differential.

Note that these have been several LT230 versions that have 1.2 HI ration.
After looking at their web page and calling them directly, I think they support some versions of LT230 with 1.4 and 1.211 ratio.
Better giving them a call to determine if a given transfer is compatible or not.

Again info provided by the Series Two club forum, but Island 4x4 seem to be the cheapest for Roamerdrives at the moment compared to the other major suppliers.

NB - Part numbers are for the Series version Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....
