Hi , I have a bit of an odd question, which is going to be more economical; solo loaded to the roof and quite close to weight or empty ish save the edc and passenger, towing a little covered lightweight trailer? This is in broad terms and at a Jimny scale but it's the principles I'm interested in? Obviously coupled one travels at reduced speed which is good for the consumption but one is also running for longer which isn't ? I do do a lot of towing with the car but it is not really a valid comparison having a maximum train weight trailer behind for a short time against a long run with a very light trailer on. To give an idea of the proposed arrangements I'm thinking something akin to a 4x3 like halfords sell but not one of those as they are way too much money for what you get, think more like a medium sized roof box on a bike transporter chassis sort of thing, small, light and aerodynamic. The other compounding issue of course is that realistically I am only one really necessary but utterly superfluous piece of camping gubbins away from having to have a trailer on the grounds of available space anyway, but the economy aspect can be an added point of leverage either to get less junk or go the extra mile. Help? Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

On a long run to Germany with a Defender 110 with roof rack and 1 ton of trailer I got average 1,6 litres pr 100 km, on the same run without trailler but with RTT (James Baroud) I got 1,5 litres pr 100 kilometers.
Without the trailer I was cruising 120 - 130 km/h with trailer 95 km/h. The Defender is on MT\s both runs. HTH Glen "Rafiki" 2007 110 STW - Rolling rebuild. |

With a very small trailer, you're likely to see better economy because of the speed restriction that comes with it. It may be different with a bigger trailer but at that small end of the scale the drag will have barely any effect on fuel consumption at 60mph.
On the other hand, a fully loaded vehicle (with roof box?) at 70-ish mph will be working harder. Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? You're braver than I thought!" - Princess Leia |

It's the working harder hence using more fuel that is what I'm wanting to avoid if I can. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

I wouldn't worry about running for longer at lower speeds. Just not enough of an issue to worry about.
Due to the complexities of aerodynamics etc, it's something you can only really find out by experimentation. |

^ Hmm, indeed that is not very good on fuel, only 6.25 km per liter..?
My 20 yr old 300 Tdi does about 10.45 km per liter, average commuting traffic, and that is with roofrack and 265 AT tyres. With trailer at max 90 km/hr it is just a lttle bit less but not much... I get to have a better idea on what to expect today as I'm off to west Anglesey to collect a replacement for the Sankey so a decent run with an empty trailer should give me a sort of baseline against running solo. Will be interesting to see what the difference in fuel consumption actually is. Is that nutter still in charge of the speed cameras in North Wales or have they caught up with the rest of the world? That was a waste of time and fuel, get to the place expecting some sort of converted barn type arrangements with a load of trailers on display not some quarter arssed operation out of the back of a car. Then there was the trailer, defective lighting, tyres, brakes and wheel bearings. Not what I was expecting from the phone call and pictures on ebay. Then when I point out the defects and chip the price to reflect the additional work needed I get abuse. Nah sorry mate, I am from Yorkshire, I know what I am looking at and it ain't what you described. Keep it and your attitude. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.
