Maindealer and engine oil
Just going over some service receipts for a 2.4 Puma and I see that the maindealer used Castrol Edge Pro engine oil. I've searched but I cannot find the specs for this oil that match the handbook specs. I cannot find any Castrol Edge in the 5W-30 category that matches the Ford specs. Wonder if this is really suitable for the 2.4? Any comments?
Found an earlier receipt where the oil listed was Land Rover oil SLX C1. This definitely doesn't sound right for a 2.4 and should be used in a 2.2. Seems that it always pays to check these things on the day. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali
2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu

The garages have huge bulk drums of oil - the last dealer I looked "behind the scenes" also had a bulk measurer to put the oil into the car. I would not trust the receipt either. Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Last time I went it was Shell Helix, not a fan of LR dealers any more.

They seem to acess you as to how much they can rip you off for dependant on snobby lingo used.
IMHO, there is no doubt the last few years they have changed, at least near me anyway..

Hello spudfan

Agree...If the dealer (or independant) changes your oil...ask before, what is going in...agree also with MartinK
that the receipt / invoice 'schedule' of parts / oils may not be right...I defiantly got a fully service record from Land Rover on a new 300tdi which was adjusted from an early similar vehicle processed that day, showing work done that wasn't and didn't include aspects that were, I'd requested the old parts to be left in the vehicle...(each with a small tipex mark)...didn't need this level of 'risk management' as the Invoice showed the right Reg Number but wrong VIN and Colour... almost certainly a admin' error...and soon corrected...but all too easy to just pay and leave...Shocked

CASTROL Spec'...

Castrol Edge Pro is perfect , you are fussing over nothing. Thumbs Up

If its synthetic, and within the 5W/30 viscosity range, then its fine in a 2.4 puma, regardless of make etc.

Main dealer, indie, Morgan or truck, I supply my own oil (Magnatec 5W-30, suitable for both my Ford engines, 2.0 Duratec and 2.4 Duratorq respectively, stock up whenever there's an offer at Asda).

Bit paranoid, but 40 years or so ago, I worked in one of the biggest main dealers in the country where it was quite common practice for the apprentices who actually carried out the routine services - you're paying top technicians' hourly rates, they're rebuilding gearboxes and differentials; filter and spark plug changes are done by 17-year-olds - to get the parts from the stores (fighting at the works counter, "20,000 mile service for an X", "10,000 mile service for a Y" etc., the storemen knowing by heart what's specified by the manufacturer, handing the bits over and marking up the work sheet for invoicing the customer) to NOT fit said parts to a customer's vehicle, but keep them for the weekend when they serviced their mates' and neighbours' cars.

And the oil? Used oil was collected and sent back to our bulk supplier for recycling...

But I'm sure things have changed since then...

Having worked for a main dealer I know for a fact that frequently the wrong fluids would be used. The mechanics, no technicians....erm grease monkeys used to use the nearest hose reel to dispense oil. At the time they had two one for a higher viscosity diesel oil and that frequently went in Ford Zetecs that should use 5 30.

Tricky oil filters too often were not changed. Moving on a few years my girlfriends car went to the same garage and it was obvious the plastic oil filter housing had not been touched as it was still covered in dirt with no finger prints on it. On a focus this is a pain of a job and even removing the filter from the cup is a hassle and pretty much impossible without man handling it.

All things considered I don't really trust garages lol

I'm not particular regarding brands as such. As long as the specifications on the bottle meet the specs in the handbook I'm O.K. with it. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
