Stainless Steel Performance Exhaust (cut/sleeve or weld)
Hi all,

I recently bought a used allisport intercooler for my TD5. The lovely chap was also selling his 'Twisted Performance' exhaust. So obviously, I bought both. I did some quick checks and although they were both off a 2.4 Puma, I was happy the intercooler would definitely fit and so would the exhaust (with some fettling).

The difference in exhaust is the stud pattern/shape where it fits to the manifold. The TD5 is oval/triangular with 3 bolts and the puma is square 4 bolt. I was hoping that the join on the down pipe to centre section would be the same as mine. Nope.

So, the question is;

Am I better cutting both (somewhere down my downpipe) and welding on somewhere on the middle section of the 'new' exhaust.? Or, cut both and use a stainless steel 'sleeve' type joint? Or is there something else?

Cheers in advance...

Just to justify, I got both a good price and my exhaust needed some welds in the last MOT and I can put my fingers through a hole in the tail pipe (plus it compliments the other mods) TD5 Defender 90

Easiest option perhaps would be to cut both, obtain a double ended slip joint and clamp the two together? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

Yep, that was my thought so already bought the joint at lunchtime form the motor factors.

Just wanted to make sure there wasn't another better/obvious option (not including sell it on)

I think the exhaust manifold is on opposite sides between puma/td5? 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Maybe...

...but i'm hoping it follows the same route from the middle/cat ish section as i'll join it there somewhere. My downpipe is a really long piece Wink TD5 Defender 90

Update.

I've offered it up and have a problemo. It does come down from the other side like grafty99 says and the dog leg is so extreme it can't be used in reverse.

So, I can only use the tailpipe section and a bit more. It would mean it goes from the manifold, straight down the stainless decat I already have, then essentially go straight out the back. No baffles, no cat, no back box. It would mean I have not used the downpipe or middle section (which comes with a baffle section of sorts).

What shall I do? Sell it and hope I get more than what I paid? Or just use half of it? Probably can't sell just the downpipe and middle section? TD5 Defender 90

I would sell it complete and then with the profit buy the correct exhaust?

Or maybe see if you can buy the down pipe separately? 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Here is the exhaust. I'm still toying with keeping it.

It will fit existing brackets etc. from the decat back (so I could use the 3rd, 4th and 5th section in the pic). Now, mine already has a straight-through decat pipe. If I joined the two together, i would have a straight pipe from the manifold all the way out the back. No baffles, no boxes, no anything. Will this have a detrimental affect on the car (lack of back pressure etc.)? Assuming the noise would also be a tad louder?

Cheers

I was advised by Gary at Alive that no back pressure was the cause of turbo over speed. This was a cause of known failures. As a result I retained the original back box, decat and straight pipe for the rest! 20 K Km's no problems!😀
