It was a while ago I took mine out, but I don't recall the green bit coming off separately. I took the whole plate off (ah, just realized yours is the new dash, mines a 2001 old style... ).

The green ring is part of the socket. A few tabs on the back of the socket need compressing to push the whole unit out from the back. Ray

I broke mine on the 300tdi which is the same with the green thingy, I ended up sticking a spare mud socket in instead lol 1998 110 300Tdi White Hard Top
