Ifor Williams trailer
Hi guys,

I'm buying a ifor Williams general duty trailer. One of the options is for a tailgate or loading ramp that's gas assisted. My question is, is it handy to remove the loading ramp and ram if needed. I know it won't be as quick as the tailgate version but don't want to be wrestling the gas assisted ram on and off. The guy I'm dealing with only orders them in on demand so can't see one. Thanks,

Ivor Williams always have a big display at the Anglesey show. Not sure if you want to drive here, but the show is 9 and 10 August.


The show ground isn't too far from the Ferry terminal at Holyhead.

Personally I wouldn't bother, unless you need one. Save your money and buy mesh side or something!!

I've got the ramp on mine, it's a very substantial bit of engineering. I would say a two person job due to weight and size, not something I would think about removing.

I've got an older GD84 with a spring assisted loading ramp, and in order to carry some long pieces of oak I had to take the rear ramp off - about an hour to take it off and an hour to replace - and it is very heavy!

Thanks for the replies guys,

Hmm an hour, I don't really fancy that. I suppose I don't really need a ramp and when I do I could just get a pair of aluminium ramps.

Would the ifor ramp take the weight of a 2 ton digger or small dumper.

I have a pair of Ifor Williams ramps. They are galvanised mild steel and as such are quite heavy. I would say that they would definitely take the weight of a 2 tonne digger. Defender 90XS SW

I have a GD85 with ramp and mesh sides. Sides are all easy to come off but ramp is definitely a two man job.

Payload is 2200Kg and ramp will handle the payload so will take 2 tonne plant. great trailer.

I have an LM146 with the standard sides and tailgate, plus the standard IW steel loading ramps which stow under the bed of the trailer when not in use.

The ramps are amply strong enough for an object up the the max payload of the trailer, so about 3 tonnes.

Although heavy, the convenience of the independent ramps is considerable since the trailer can be converted in a few minutes from dropside to flatbed.

As an aside, does anyone have or know of a full mesh kit for an LM146 for sale at a reasonable price?

Great, thanks guys. Think I'll go with the ramp least if I do change my mind it would be cheaper to buy the tailgate.
