Thinking of buying a D4 (keeping the 90) but looking at the D4 forum, it frightens the life out of me to see so many issues, especially electrical gremlins. I know there are few D4 owners on here just wondered are they pretty reliable, it would need to be an early version with fairly high miles, as nearer vehicles are a kings ransom. We did have 2 D3 but both of them were in-out of the KR garage like cuckoo clocks, averaging 400 a month on repairs.
Alternatively Land Cruiser or Toureg any thoughts from current or previous owners? Jumped ship to reliability - Mitsubishi L200 Puma 90 XS - Sold D3 - 2.7 S x2 (both Sold) Freelander 2 HSE - Sold Freelander 1 - Sold Disco 2 - Sold |

Following with interest
I'm planning on trading in my Range Rover and X5 for a D4. Had a D3 a while back and really liked it as a family car and would sit well with the new 110 but a friend is on his second D4 after dealer had to replace it and he has issues with the new one. I'm nowhere near a main dealer and the wife would kill me if it was always away. |

As well as my 110 i also run a "posh" landrover. Over the last few years i have had among others-
2005 Discovery3 HSE 2007 Discovery 3 SE 2008 Discovery 3 HSE 2011 Discovery 4 XS The problem with looking on the forum is that people only post up when they have a problem, so it can look scary for any potential buyer Out of all my previous discoveries, non of them have caused any major problems. One thing to look for on all discovery models is suspension bushes. All of mine have needed some work on the bushes, but all of them had done 60000 miles or more. My disco4 had the front arms changed just before i got it, i ran it for a year and never spent a penny on it. Never had any electrical gremlins on any of mine apart from a duff battery (discos are very sensitive to voltage and can throw strange faults up if the volts drop) Don't have a disco at the mo as i have got myself a Range rover 4.4tdv8 Paul 2000 90 TD5,galv chassis, d2 axles ,Bas remap , alisport intercooler , d2 transfer box , side windows-more to come-much more!! *GONE* 2004 110 TD5 Double cab. *GONE* 2010 110 2.4 XS station wagon |

One of my friends bought one brand new top spec- very lovely truck.
It cost them £1000 a month in repairs and after a year they said no this is pointless and swapped it for a Subaru outback - had it 6 months and only ever put fuel in it. Had electrical issues, under gear issues, joints wearing out, alarm issues, central locking, leaks. Whatever the issue was, it was £1000 to correct it. Only ever used by a wife who would ferry their daughter around or dogs or collect odd horsey bits- never towed, never off roaded. Not saying they are all like that, but I couldn't swallow £1k a month on repairs Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

Same here Ryderoo. I have my "posh" landrover for weekends, holidays and towing at work(even though i have my 110, i still prefer towing with my other car). The D3/4 is the best car i have ever towed with and i regularly tow the full 3.5t. I have had Merc MLs, land cruisers, jeeps bmws etc but still come back to land rovers
Only reason i went for a Range Rover this time was because i fancied a change My Last D4 Click image to enlarge Paul 2000 90 TD5,galv chassis, d2 axles ,Bas remap , alisport intercooler , d2 transfer box , side windows-more to come-much more!! *GONE* 2004 110 TD5 Double cab. *GONE* 2010 110 2.4 XS station wagon |

Probably not all that relevant but love my '09 D3 (one of the last) to bits, which is the best LR I have ever owned (excluding 90's of course) including FFRR and has been perfectly reliable though still has only done 38k Rob

Had a 10 plate from new and kept it for 3 years and 20,000 miles. Apart from a small issue with one of the wiper blades one winter ( which was fixed in 10 mins) it was faultless. Best vehicle we ever had. I miss it

I have a 2004 D3 HSE I bought cheaply for £7000 3 years ago and it did have a expensive 1st year as it was already at 150k then, but the last two years have been fine with just wear and tear and regular maintainace. now over 200k and still going strong. Probably still worth 5-6000 so not bad depreciateion at all lol
It has a private plate and will be totally facelifted to 2014MY 2008 Santorini Black 110 XS USW (Sold) 2015 Discovery 4.5 Black pack Firenze red XS 2008 Corris Grey 110 XS USW (sold) 2011 Santorini Black 110 XS USW (Sold) |

I agree with Marsie in that most people only post things on a forum when they have issues, so the same can be said on here about the defender - look how many posts are here on the EGR valve for example ...
My partner has a 2014 XS D4 and loves it to bits ! she has off roaded it a few times now and does a lot of country driving. She has only put fuel in it so far, but its still in its warranty. Its not to my case as I still prefer my 110. Its a technical vehicle and has a lot of gizmos, but so do all the competition. (but having seen all the gizmos work I m impressed!) Its a bit of a gamble what ever you buy, and I dont think the D4 is any different to any of the others in the market at the moment, however I think its probably the best for what it does. 2nr Disco 4's for me and the only issues i've had with mine have been a creaking dash and a small drip from the shark fin.
As much as I love my Defender the Discovery 4 does everything brilliantly, an exceptional vehicle. |

I'm now on my third D4 and haven't had any real problems with any of them apart from servicing Cheers Ian

Wife has a D4 and loves it. We bought it 2012, 10 plate, and gearbox went wrong first weekend, but was easily fixed. Since then minor issues like boot not unlocking strange squeaks etc, but it is an awesome vehicle. Mechanics from main dealer says we can expect big bill next year as lots of issues likely to arise but not sure how they can know. Great for towing.

Had D3 for a few years no problems and had a 10 plate D4 from new no problems and it's done over 100 thousand
In my opinion the freeby2 and Disco4 are the best motors Land Rover have made. |
