Brake Systems warning light - help me diagnose.. EBD ?
Hi,

Swapped out discs and pads on the rear of my non-ABS 2.4 Puma.

Bleed the system at the rear only, got no more bubbles - pedal felt hard.

Locked it all up, went for a slow drive to bed in the pads - all working.

Near the end of the drive I see the brake systems warning light flicker (red exclamation mark under the engine temp gauge) - checked hand brake, fully off.

Light flickers intermittently, sometimes quite dim and occasional periods of being solid on or off. Observed that if I accelerated swiftly that it cleared for a wee while, but that isn't %100 repeatable.

Handbook says:

Quote:
Brake fluid level - Red
Illuminates when the brake fluid level is low. If the indicator illuminates when driving (and the parking brake is not applied), stop the vehicle gently, as soon as safety permits. Check and top-up the brake fluid, if necessary. If the lamp remains illuminated, seek qualified assistance before continuing. Have the problem checked by your Land Rover Dealer/Authorised Repairer.

Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) - Red
Illuminates when a fault with the EBD system is detected.

Fluid appears within range.

What is EBD ?? Perhaps have I introduced air into the front lines (the reservoir got low at one stage). Is it a sensor on the servo where the front and rear split, and maybe air is in the front lines but not back, and it's seeing a good solid hydraulic system on the rear but a bit of air causing lag/compression on the front?

Or ?

Braking feels OK, even if I put the foot down hard - no apparent leaks at the rear.

Any advice appreciated. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Mine did similar and looked like Reservoir was OK but added a few mils of fluid and it was fixed. It would flicker on hills damn sensitive that fluid level sensor

I have a similar problem, I know it's the handbrake switch. It only works on the last mm of travel, so if I don't physically hold the handbrake down, the light will flicker on/off.

Try holding the handbrake down as your driving along or pull it up a smidge to see if it comes on.

The switch is around £10 new so I'm looking for a second hand one...😳

Cheers

Simon

Pretty sure it's not hand brake, but I won't rule it out. I know the switch, I was in that area not so long ago. Thumbs Up

I think the 'changes when I accelerate' thing leans towards the level sensor. Just topped it up to a bee's dick under 'max' - coming from a reservoir that was half way between min/max it might be alright in the AM. I'll pull the cap off and see if the alarm lights up according to expectation too.

Right now it's defender bed time for me, did a 15hr shift at work so it's time to veg on the couch!

Did I read correctly that EBD is an ABS only sensor/feature though? Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Check that the level float in the reservoir cap is completely free to move. Sometimes they benefit from being removed and given a good shake.

Ja, will do...

Pretty convinced it'll be the level sensor.

Have confirmed EBD is ABS only also:

It usually stands for Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, so yes.
