2014 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 PU Keswick Green

LR Winch Bumper Bolts

I have the LR Heavy Duty winch bumper and Warn 9.5cti unit fitted to the front of my truck. It was fitted by the dealer when ordered.

Are the 4 bolts and fixings which hold it onto the chassis the same as the standard bumper fixings or are they up-rated? Longer, fatter etc?

Only ask as fixings are corroded and I want to replace them as they look a chuff

As a rule most folk use the stock mounting bolts. HOWEVER I personally feel and do use High Tensile bolts for Winch bumper and winch mount. High tensiles you will have to paint them to stop them rusting.

What ever you do DO NOT USE STAINLESS

you will be amazed at how many people change bolts "willy nilly" for stainless, they may look the part and don't rust, but they have virtually no tensile strength whatsoever, fine for small brackets etc. but not for anything load bearing

Get some 10.9s from a local bolt supplier. Proper hi tensile and surprisingly cheap. Get some paint/grease/anti corrosion something over them and you're golden.

In terms of bumper bolts it's shear strength across the section you're after - this might correlate with tensile strength anyway... Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

i use std bolts on mine and they have never proved to be a problem. you will no doubt find there are 6 bolts holding on the winch bumper, normally two more pickup on the JATE ring/chassis mounts.

i run three 90s all with winches and all used hard either for competition work or training or guiding on our Drive Round Days and all these have std bolts with no problems over last 12 or so years. Cheers

Normal 8.8 will be OK but I just prefer that little bit of warm feeling knowing it's OTT lol anyways to be honest dare say most winch mounts that failed has been due to Chassis corrosion rather than bolt failure. My old 90 had elongated bumper mounts !!!!
