Maybe a bit of a drag but Blacksheep used to offer a fitting service as well. I have one on mine (not fitted by Clive) but certainly pleased with it. I asked for a plate to go behind the 6 holes in the x-member that the tow bar bolts pass through is it means I can remove the tow bar without losing nuts! 1999 Defender TD5 110

Jeez thats a shame! Only recently he posted news that he'd got an apprentice and was starting to do fitments again!
Wonder how much a press brake would cost..... |

I called for clive today and left a voicemail. I will report back if he does call back, possibly not if he has retired.
I spoke to the garage and they said the time involved to do it with extensions, rather than the 1/4 chassis style would add up to the same cost as getting £300 one. I can also see that at some point the shock hanger has been welded previously, so could be an idea to do the full job, as it goes beyond this. Just need to physic myself up to spend more money. I have asked the place where it is going to be painted for a quote too, incase they can come in cheaper. |

Sticking my ore in....
I would cut that section out back to good metal and have a look inside first. Wont hurt as if its scrap its coming off anyway and if it is relatively good then weld in a rectangle and off you go again. Competent welder could do it in less than a hour. Its an odd place for it to go, they usually go on the underneath on the inside first. If its in for a full rebuild then I would say get it done with the chassis legs as where the chassis meets the cross member is a maze of hollows and rot traps - the chassis extension means you can cut it off at good material and make a stronger joint and better job of it. My 110 had 5 or 6 plates in the cross member before the MOT man demanded a new one. That has been on for 2 years now and will probably do for another 7 years before it requires work again - in which case a galv chassis is in order. If it were mine, in that condition, it would be replaced along with the extensions, back as far along the chassis rails as made sense. If there's a hole like that in one place it's unlikely it's restricted to just that spot. It's also a bloody sight easier/cheaper to do with the body off.
Just my opinion though - there's no right or wrong as long as the repair or replacement is done correctly. |

Yes replace - if you 'patch' the rust worms will reappear in the future and you will regret it! Cheers

if it was me, if it was just a local bit and the rest was ok I'd patch it with a view to replacing it in the future if I still had the landy in a couple of yrs. You may intend never to sell it but happens and it could be written off stolen etc and put the money towards a galvanised chassis in the future.
But if it does need replacing I would replace as much as possible. You'd be sick as a dog if it rotted in a hole next year in a chassis leg when you could have changed the lot for similar money. 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car) 2009 - current .... 2005 zx10r |

I will do a final check of everywhere else on it before making the final decision. It's likely I will just stump up the money, pretty much everything else has been replaced, all body panels, engine, axles and so on and on and on and on...
