Yes indeed it can especially if there's no vapour barrier between concrete and timber flooring I would be concerned is it planks or parquet

Should be an expansion gap all around the perimeter of the room, normally concealed under the skirting board which should lightly sit on top of the flooring.
My oak floor (4m x 4m) expands a good cm Winter/Summer. Real wood expands a lot more than laminate. Moles |

I'd be more concerned about the edges than the middle. If it expands it's strong enough to push brickwork out. I have previously had to cut up a customers one month old expensive floor because of this. V8 90...WIP

as all of the above have said, yes it can & ive seen it push ashlar sandstone out of place on the outside of a 4 storey Georgian grade 2 listed mansion in Winchcombe!
However - an easy ish fix, remove a skirting board on the 'long' side, invest in a combi cutter and trim 10mm off its length for its expansion and see how it goes. Keith |

Thanks for the replies. This is what I thought. If we buy it we would remodel the ground floor anyway, so would lift and refit it anyway.

Guy, are you sure it's the oak flooring and not the concrete below being affected by something like red ash? It was used as an infill under the concrete then the sulphates react over time causing the concrete to crack and "crown" 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone

Assuming the house is 1980s it's a bit young for that, though still possible. I take it the floor 'bounces' and isn't solid? V8 90...WIP

I've installed a lot of oak flooring - always from Russwood in Newtonmore.
On concrete with a thick layer of rubber glue a new mm thick to even out the contrete and act as a vapour barrier On a suspended floor with a portanailer. Love oak flooring! Never experienced what you say - looks like you have the answers anyway... This is the rubberized glue: https://russwood.co.uk/shop/flooring/floor...-adhesive/ Click image to enlarge Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

Thank you all so much. I'm not actually certain if the floor is 'real' oak, but it certainly isn't laminate.
I'll be sure to have the floor carefully surveyed if we do buy, including the concrete itself and the walls. Thank you again, so much more than just Land Rover advice on here. Great forum, great blokes (and ladies!). This is the house: http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sa...miumA=true Cheers! Guy. DINGO - '99 Discovery 2 V8 with 300Tdi transplant, chawton white.
