Body roll
Hi guys,
After fitting a solid and heavy roof rack with a roof box the old truck is wallowing in the corners. What is the best way to stop body roll, is it shocks, springs, both or something else?

Cheers,

Roy 300tdi 90 1996.

All of the above!

The first thing is to look at what your already have though. If it's old and tired, then a simple replacement with new kit may be all that's necessary! After that, then a rear ARB could help. Firmer springs & shocks will reduce roll, but they will also firm up the ride in general, especially when empty. This may or may not be what you want!

What truck do you own? Is it fitted with ARBs? How old is the suspension, bushes etc? A bit more info is needed to give you a proper answer. Thumbs Up 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

blocks of wood instead of springs helps..some members on here prefer pine to oak ....

but in reality new springs and shocks rated to the load of the vehicle will help as will anti roll bars

a check on all your suspension bushes and replacing any worn ones will do wonders as well

you may need to weigh the truck and rack to get a real idea of its weight and load but it does make a difference

my 90 weighs 2400 kg inc roof tent me and all camping gear....

Hi there, thanks for replies.

My truck is a 96 300tdi hard top (converted to rear seats).
I don't think it's got arb fitted unless they were factory standard fit?

I have only had it for 18 monthsand the suspension looks pretty old to me.

I may make a start fitting arb, do these make a big difference?

We use it mainly for road driving, it gets very little off road use so a stiffer set up would be fine for us.

Can you fit spring assisters? . You know the rubber thingies you can fit between the coils on the springs. I fit some to an old chrysler sunbeam I had when that got all soggy. I think they are used for towing.

ARB will make a huge difference, especially if you dont have one...

i went from standard to uprated and it made a big difference.

I've considered an ARB on mine, doesn't have one currently, and apparently makes a big difference, especially on a laden 110!

I'd definitely look at renewing what you have though, there's a fair chance it's all original and will be very tired if so!

I've just fitted a pair of standard ARBs to my 110 CSW as it didn't have any. I went for a pair of new take offs from Urban Truck and some good quality joints. Took me a few hours to fit but all the holes and mounting points were there and all lined up nicely.

It's made it sit a lot nicer around corners and certainly doesn't wallow as much. The steering feels much sharper too but not sure whether that might be psychological!

I've not had it fully laden yet but spending the next couple of weeks touring around Scotland so should have a bit of weight in it for a proper test Very Happy 2002 Defender 110 CSW TD5

Fit front and rear ARBs from an old disco 300tdi, scrapyards are full of them these days. You will need 2x rear brackets as they are different, otherwise the rest is a straight swap, worth fitting new ball joints and bushes though.

Lotus_eprit, do the front and rear off a disco fit my 90 300tdi. Do I need a fitting kit or anything else? 300tdi 90 1996.

Ok, so fitted front and rear anti roll bars today. Its made a world of difference, and really cut down the body roll.

Cheers. 300tdi 90 1996.
