Swingaway recommendations
It doesn't look like even the latest MY2011 incarnation of the Defender has seen any improvement in the quality of the rear door hinge strength. Up until now I've always automatically replaced the door mounted plate with a Mantec swingaway.

Things look like they've changed in the marketplace with more choice now? I've got my new motor coming soon and I'm looking for informed recommendations for the best current altermative to leaving the wheel hanging off the back door.

Which ones are best? Which keep their powder coating on? Which are silent/vibration-free? Which are the strongest? Easiest to fit?

Cheers in advance.

Mantec one is very good. Bearmach is cheaper but not quite up there in terms of quality. Safari Equip does one but I've heard of several people having issues with it. Their other gear is well made however.

Ade, I have the nakatanenga one fitted to my Landy. It is very well made from steel first galvanised before being powder coated. Where the swing away arm meets the guide plate both bits are stainless steel so when the powder coat wears away it wont rust. The weight of the carrier and wheel is carried by the cross member with all the weight removed from the rear door. Here is the thread I done on fitting it:

Thanks chaps. I've also now bothered to find the previous threads on much the same subject and there's plenty to chew over.

Sorry for duplicating a much-visited subject Embarassed D300 HSE 110

Have to say, I've got the Alisport / Sonic one, and cannot recommend it highly enough. Strong enough to carry at least 2 wheels piggy backed (with longer bolts - if you needed too), smooth, well made, and all the weight on the crossmember.

Bloody heavy though - you MIGHT want a wee hand to get it installed - just 2 minutes help until the main bracket is mounted.

Yes it is more expensive than the rest but you get what you pay for.

I have the Mantec one.

Does the job very well but my powder coating is coming off in parts (around the hinge) after 3 years. Bit disappointing.

I wouldn't be without one - rust or no rust.

Sonic's looks good but wasn't available when I bought mine. important that it stays attached to the back door. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS

The Sonic one does not attach to the back door, thus making it ideal for tailgates.

It simply open completely independent of the vehicle, with all the weight on the crossmember, nothing on the tub, and no drilling into the bodywork, or anywhere else as it uses existing holes in crossmember. 2001 TD5 110 DCPU in Bonatti Grey
