As from 2005, Td5 had metalized doors, like Puma Defenders.
Hence have much better corrosion protection. You can recognise these by the ronded upper corner on the inside. Electric windows and central locking were options, but commonly found on many Td5's. Are you sure you want a pick-up?
I bought one and converted it in a Hardtop as I felt cramped in there. Click image to enlarge I is a very basic 2003 farm runabout en clearly used for that as Icould still smell the sheep and still find bullets in it. Now it is a little different: Click image to enlarge These farm runabouts are basic, so no abs, traction controll, electric windows etc just as basic as it can be. Mine has the new middle console but most parts are blanket off as only the alam lights and the rear fog light switch are in there. No nice carpet off-course just rubber mats so you can wash it out with a water hose. Like farmers (should) do. 2002 model year (late 2001) is when the EU3 variant of the Td5 engine came in - you can also tell these Defenders by the round reverse and fog lamps and new centre dash layout with centre cluster of switches around the radio. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Yes I think I'll go for a 2002 model. I get the farm hack basic model. I will be using this as a second car for towing a boat or a horse box, and for some fun at the weekends. I plan to create my own defender to have for many years, so I will be stripping it down to the chassis, repairing it to new as can be standard, and galvanising the chassis, and maybe the bulkhead, which I may paint over aswell. I know I could but one cheaper, but I wouldn't know what work has been done to what extent. If I wanted to buy one in this condition, I would pay over 10k for one, so I will probably pay a little more restoring it. The reason for a truck cab, is so I can have the hard top in the winter if required, and the soft top for he summer. I have found a roll cage from safety systems that will allow the cab to be fitted without removing the roll cage. I plan to part exchange both the gearbox and transfer gearbox, to a disco ratio, to make journeys a bit easier. The horse box will only be for short journeys, and the boat well I could tow it with a car it's that light. So I still have a few questions. Apart from the ecu loom, the truck cab is pretty basic. Can electric Windows be retro fitted easily? Is the loom in behind the dash? Or is a full rewrite in order? I plan on stripping everything down, full respray (my father in law is a spray painter!) overhaul the engine, fix the loom, and customise the dash with some more instruments, like rpm (maybe if I can find one for a reasonable price), voltmeter ammeter, turbo boost gauge, oil pressure etc. So I am not to worried about the smell in the cab! I might do a small suspension lift, put bigger tyres, spots on the roll cage, led lights all round, and a dlr bumper. This is the defender I have wanted for years. I have only seen one done like this before, and it was selling for 20k+. I won't be selling it, it will be passed onto my son if he wants it, so I need to get something that will last. I won't need it running for a year or so, as it will be my second car, so I can have it stripped completely in my garage for a long time. (The boat is getting the same treatment) I may be mad, but I think owning a defender is mad!, but so much fun. I have a cheap car, I don't splash money on other things except the boat!, so I think spending 15k on a defender rust free that I can use for years is a good investment in me! Any thoughts on the plan? |

The ratio difference is only in the transfer box. If you fit 35"tyres like mine you don't need a Disco tranfer box anyway.

Almost on it's side about 45 deg accoding to the brown waterline I found and that did some damage to the electrical past, so it was cheap, engine gearbox etc are fine. ABout the electric windows, I think you should be able to order the parts and looms and probably the needed connector are behind the dash. They are not in the doors yet. It will be fun building your own 90, It did it twice already. As I want te keep playing in the mud with it this time I did it in steps. My first rebuild took 3 years, OK having my first child and building a house did speed things up. Many thanks for the replies. The bigger tyres are great looking, but i am trying to make it look as bog standard as possible. I have settled on a 02 up td5, truck cab for the moment. I have decided to put the soft top conversion and roll cage on the long finger for the time being, they can be put on at a later stage no problem. I am stuck on one item, I have tried to search the forums but i couldnt find an answer, so forgive me if this is duplicated. I plan on fiting some extra guages, RPM, Oil pressure, boost pressure, Voltmeter, ammeter, and maybe oil temp, and if I can find a kit of guages, replace the fuel guage and water temp with a similar type to keep them all the same. The big question I have is, since there are only water temp, and fuel level guages currently fitted, where do I get the pick up to get the information for the guages? Is it directly from the ECU multi plug? I have seen the rpm guage posts, so i understand them, and the boost will be fitted from the manifold, but the oil pressure, oil temp, voltmeter, etc. Do I stitch into the sender unit wiring, or take it from the ecu? I have seen old style VDO guages, plain black with chrome surrounds, all analog. Any ideas where I could find such kits? Are all 12V guages compatible? I have found a defender with a galvanised chassis, so I might go for it, as it saves a bit of work. Many thanks for all the advice. Oh the reason for the truck cab, is to eventually bring it back to Ireland. Roof van 90 will be about 5 times the car tax compared to the pickup!! Cheers |

Take a look at my rebuild thread if you get a chance mine was like roel's but I have kept it as landrover standard, it is a 2000 so much closer inside to the Series 3 layout, as said above very basic but now very clean and shiny.

Wow, that is a nice build, what a good job.
That is exactly what I am after, but I am probably going to do the build myself. I don't have enough funds to buy and pay for restoration. That Landy should last a long time, great to see |

Why did you sell your Puma 90 XS, did you not like it?
Or some other reason. Just thinking you could have possibly converted that as it has all the toys already fitted. |
