Puma Hard Top body cappings
Having owned 2 Td5's that have had problems with rusting body cappings I am bitterly disappointed to find the same problem developing on my 2 year old Puma. I had hoped Land Rover had learned from their recent (10years) experience with this problem but apparently not!

I see the only solution is to have the vehicle taken to pieces & new galvanised cappings fitting. Careful attention being paid to protecting any areas of bare metal and sealant or gasket applied to keep the dissimilar metals apart.

The point of this post is does anyone know where I will be able obtain galvanised body cappings for my vehicle. I am unsure how many are needed.

Obviously the 2 long side ones.

I do not need the internal one behind the seats as it is a hard top.

The 2 rear corner ones that hold the lights

& possibly 2 small pieces either side of the rear door.

Can anyone provide part numbers or links.

Thanks

This is not good news and may put me off getting one now having been down this road before Big Cry . The reason I sold my 5 year old TD5 to move to a Series was because of the rot on the cappings and around the windscreen, everywhere in fact Crying or Very sad The Series is all galvanised of course. Oh dear I thought that they had sorted this out. Sad

The best thing would be to take the cappings off and anything else that is going to be susceptible to rust and get them dipped yourself. The going rate is £1 per KG but if you go to a local farm equipment manufacturer fencing/gates etc you can sometimes throw your stuff in with theirs. Do a google search for Galvanisers in your area. Some require you to blast any paint off before hand to get it to bare metal, others will do this for you and acid dip prior to treatment. Thumbs Up

Good luck, good job it's a hard top, should make the job easier.

Contacts for your local galvanisers, very cheap, probably cost you about £30 to do your own Thumbs Up

Mine had the CSW roof removed and new cappings fitted but they never fitted the safari door correctly and it bangs constantly when on rougher than marble roads.... i can get my finger between the top edge and the hard-top. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

Their was an article a while ago about a guy who bought a new Puma and on delivery he and his mate stripped it right down to the chassis and rebuilt it with a galv bulkhead, cappings etc and improving various items as it all went back together. A very good idea and it would all be built properly second time around Thumbs Up

The problem with doing body work under warranty is that it won't be done properly and the rust will just come back through again! At least Red Dot got new cappings which is what you should have, shame they couldn't put it back together again properly Big Cry Do it again I would say Mad

Im very acutely aware (maybe more than most) of the failings on dealers body shops on the puma.

Rust appears anywhere on a number of cars - im not so sure this is a big issue..it is what warranty is for Mike

Thanks,

Think everything has been covered.

I am aware galvanising is not an expensive job particularly if you can put your bits among a load of gates, trailers etc being sent by a blacksmith which I can. Problem with this plan is once I get my vehicle stripped down I will not have a vehicle to deliver the bits for galvanising. The blacksmith is 40 miles away.

Zagato has it spot on. If Land Rover agreed to do it under warranty I guess they would just cover the rust with a couple of coats of paint. They would restore the vehicle to its original condition and I would be waiting for the rust to appear again. I could do that mtself with a couple of cans of spray paint, I did my last 2 before I traded them in. I have come across someone on another forum who has had this problem fixed on his Puma 3 times. They have eventually agreed to fit new cappings although unless these are galvanised and fitted correctly with a gasket his problems will not be over for long.

I am thinking the only way forward is to do the job myself. I will have to try to overcome the problem of getting the cappings to the galvaniser as I have been advised a new set will be over £300.
