MT82 output shaft early symptoms
Can anyone say whether the following are early symptoms of mt82 output shaft failure: every few hundred miles in the last 1000 I get a short 1 to 2 seconds of screech that sounds to me like splines failing. I can feel loss of drive. Trouble is I'm fairly deaf (I wear hearing aids) so figuring out what the sound is and where exactly it comes from is a bit difficult (on the plus side I don't care how noisy my deafender is!). It does come from the front, either axle or perhaps transmission tunnel. I've had the drive flanges off and the splines look like brand new (2011 puma 110sw with 31k miles), which is a shame as that would've been easy to fix.

So, does this match with what others have seen before output shaft failure?

Thanks

When mine failed the only warning I had was a heavy metallic clunk noise when engaging gears or pulling away which only lasted a very short time before total loss of drive.

Thanks for reply.

I've got two choices I think:

1. Leave it til something breaks proper
2. Take bits apart til I find the problem. My guesses are in order of easiest to hardest - half shaft into diff, diff, output shaft, xfer box, clutch (broken springs getting stuck), gearbox.

Second option starts to get expensive (have to buy spares, seals, gaskets, tools) and takes a lot of time (months as also got to replace 100m of fence panels, build chicken enclosure to keep out foxes - electric fence may be needed) and got to keep wife happy.

First option could turn out expensive (but everything can be fixed at a cost).

Anyone able to make any suggestions?

Thx

My clutch plate springs were loose and made a spreeching noise every now and then. It then slowly got harder to engage gear until I had to have a new clutch fitted.

Exactly,....that is what happened to us,..so really, there is no useful timeworthy notice at all,...it just "goes"!
So, whatever the O.P. is experiencing,..it ain't the input shaft.

A "screech" sound makes me think clutch (spigot bearing or release bearing) not imminent spline failure. It is unlikely with spline failure that you lose drive and then regain it, once lost it stays lost.

Another alternative might be a split intercooler pipe which will screech and cause a big loss of power, possibly enough to feel like a loss of drive.

Gents, thanks very much. I'll check out hoses just in case. Clutch symptoms seem reasonable to me, I'll keep an eye on that - I hasd thought clutch feel had changed recently.

Well this week I downloaded the transfer to repair it and when you remove it you see the output shaft that comes from the gearbox. The case is that the striation is quite worn and wanted to change it, but there is no way to loosen the screw. So I am giving Sticks of blind since I do not know if it looses right or left.
Has anyone ever taken it apart?
