Diffs can whine for various reasons, generally it's due to the mesh being less than perfect or a bearing. In many cases they will go on for ages without failing.
My rear diff has a whine if I hold it at a specific speed (55 mph), and has done for the last 60-70k or so. If it gets worse I'll swap it over, otherwise it isn't a problem as I just avoid that speed on motorways/dual carriageways etc. The fix is to swap the diff. Not a difficult job, though a bit uncomfortable. About £50-100 for a second hand unit or several hundred plus for a rebuilt one from Ashcrofts or similar. |

The Inde I use, who is a mechanic not a fitter , has replace the bearing on a number of Defenders , Freelanders and RRS advises to either fit reconditioned or new diff if the internals have been damaged or just fit new bearing it all depends what he finds when it is opened up. I know which option I prefer. as a Diff could cost between £3000.00 and £5000.00 Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |

My 110 Utility XS went back to Hunter's yesterday for its 12 month/1st service. It had a whining diff too. It was seriously loud - i.e. difficult to hear a conversation over it. It has been noisy for the six months that I've had the vehicle. They are rectifying all its other faults too. Good to know that right up to the end LR managed to maintain their built in unreliability.
Failure count on this service is: New rear diff. New Steering box. New main seal on primary gearbox (this one was getting very wet). New seal on output shaft end of transfer box. Together these two faults were doing a good job of removing the need to waxoil the chassis. Removal and rehanging of rear door and investigation as to where the water is coming from that pours into the passenger footwell. Not bad for 10,000 miles - the first 5K of which were with the dealer as a demo car - and 12 months for what is a close to £40K car. |

Rear diff is whining too, reason was a failing axle case oil seal, and a lot of axle oil coming out after taking of the hub cap. Bought the 110 SW new, now 100000 kms, and failing wheel bearings due to lack of initial lubrication, even a completely rusted top swivel. Quality control for the subcontractors has never been their strongest point. Luckily I can do all the work myself.

I'm pretty sure that most of my issues are due to incorrect fluid levels at build stage. It is little difficult to say as the car was six months old when I picked it up.
Some of the work was completed before I took it away on hols to the alps. It's got down here without a problem and with a twin axle caravan on the back. It is whining away - and I think that the front is now coming out in sympathy. Still, that's what the warranty is for (would be nice if it didn't have to be used - but it's a Defender and I've had enough LRs over the years to know that warranty is a necessary part of the vehicle in its first few years. |

Well the 110 went in last week to have the diff replaced and guess what ......................Land Rover do not have any replacements new or factory recon.
It appears that they are a high volume part so many of them failing so I have had to go for an O.E.M. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |

Wow the noise has gone, I can hear the normal rattles now and the radio.
While doing the exchange it was found that the drive flange and the off side half shaft splines had worn badly moving between 4 and 6 degrees so I had those changed at the same time. Now to give a test towing the tin tent up to Scotland next week. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |

Mine had a new rear diff and one piece half & drive shafts under warranty back in June. Within a couple of weeks it developed the same noise it went in for replacement with in the first place. Steve. Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. [Insert something impressive here such as extensive list of previous Land Rovers or examples of your prestigeous and expensive items, trinkets, houses, bikes, vehicles etc] http://forums.lr4x4.com I used to be Miserable ...but now I'm ecstatic. |

Thankfully not just a couple of hundred for the half shaft and drive flange. Good old warranty. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |
