With exams finally over, I've got more time for Defender tinkering and spent yesterday afternoon starting the speaker project. I settled for a slightly unconventional setup and decided not to buy a head unit.
Instead, I ordered the following: 2x Pioneer 4" Under Dash speakers 2x Pioneer 5" speakers for the back 1x Bluetooth 4 channel amp Misc: Some MDF and felt carpet lining. I'll let you know if the setup sounds good but I'm definitely not an audio expert and have no previous system to compare it to so it may not be very helpful . After reading a thread about subs, I also want to buy a Kenwood subwoofer at some point to give the system more bass. I've still got to finish off the rear enclosures with carpet, and find a suitable method of mounting them, and then comes the dreaded drilling of the dash for the footwell speakers There's a really helpful thread on here which has given me a bit of confidence: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic23102.html Updates to come. Bit more progress today, got the brackets made up and put on the carpet lining.

So I've now finished the rear speaker enclosures and run the cables. I then took the corner off the passenger side dash to have a look about mounting the 4" speakers. It appears the thread I put a link to earlier is for TD5s where the wiper motor is housed higher up the dash. In mine, the wiper motor is bang on where the speaker would be.
When I bought it, it had the standard LR head unit with 2 speakers mounted in the headlining and so I intend to use these holes. My only concern is that the speakers are very close to your ear and so it may be unpleasant and unbalanced. Is this the standard speaker position from factory? Click image to enlarge Matt. No the standard position is in the dash. I think it was only with TDCI they brought in speakers in the very back.
The speakers were very very thin and would fit with the wiper motor where it is. To fit modern speakers you need spacers to allow room for the increased depth of modern speakers. Have a look at the Mud web site. They sell a variety of different speaker mounts that might help with your space issue.

My new speakers fitted straight into the existing holes in the headlining so temporarily I've screwed the new speakers in those holes so I'll try them there for a while. In the meantime I'll research spacers if they don't work out well in the headlining!

Audio install completed!
Sounds pretty good, I'm impressed with the Pioneer speakers however I really do want to buy a Kenwood subwoofer to complete the setup. The amp is exactly what I was looking for and the control panel is extremely convenient. Click image to enlarge I bought a combined USB and aux connector plug which sits nicely in the cubby box and goes straight into the amp underneath. I also wired up a switch from a permanent live on the battery so that I can listen to music even when the ignition is off. Click image to enlarge Another question: It came with a hi-lift jack when I bought it, and now I'm looking for ways/places to mount it without rattles and without being in the way. Behind the seats on the rear bulkhead there are a few brackets and I'm wondering if this is the standard place for securing the jack. If so what bit goes where? There isn't a "standard" place to store a Hi-Lift because they're not standard Land Rover equipment. You can get mounts to fit them all over the place including on some wheel carriers. Quick Fist clamps are another option.
There's a lot of hate for the standard old style jack that you've got and most people would seem to prefer a bottle jack: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic47334....tchet+jack |

Quick question: Did CSWs come out of the factory with sliding rear windows in 1989? I've just noticed my rear windows don't seem to be the same length as the sliding ones. I wanted to upgrade them to sliding windows and assumed these fixed piece windows were standard from factory, however a quick Google search for similar aged Landys seems to show them all with the 2-piece sliding window.

So today I started installing the central locking and alarm immobiliser kit I bought. All was going very well - whipped the door cards off and got the front actuators installed very easily using the brackets supplied in the kit. I just had to be careful the solenoids didn't foul the window when it came down. I then salvaged an old bit of rubber tubing to run the cable from the door to the bulkhead.

After doing a lot of research, I decided to crack the lock mech open and attach the rod internally. I made a series of bends in the little tab thing used to unlock the door from the inside and drilled a hole in the end to poke the rod through - all OK. I then carefully reassembled the lock, making sure all the springs were correctly located and then tested it - worked fine. I used pop rivets to replace the rivets I had to drill out. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge After bolting the mechanism back onto the door I tested it again only to find the rod I had poked through the casing and attached to the lock was loose. To identify the problem I had to drill the rivets out again and found that the little spring that keeps the lock engaged had snapped. Click image to enlarge I attempted to fabricate another spring without success. Is there any chance I can buy just the spring (if so where from?) or will I have to buy a whole new lock? Matt.
