I've had a Peugeot 207 for the last three years as a general runaround. Never had a thing go wrong with it and I fill it up once a month. Cheapest to run and most reliable car I've ever had.

Highly recommend a Renault Clio. 1.5 dci engine. I am comfortably doing 65 mpg and has a decent spec. Mpg makes up for the defender😊

Some "outside of the box" thinking here, my friend has a petrol engined fiat panda. It has the 1.2 engine and that easily returns 55+ mpg. Petrol cars are cheaper than diesel cars and don't have the same highly tuned and expensive to repair components that modern diesels have. 2006 TD5110 station wagon

Yeah, I must admit I wondered a little about the diesel requirement. My next small car (most likely an Up!, bought one for my son and now tend to drive it more than he does) will be petrol, mainly because I fear that any new pro-environment/anti-private car measures will target diesel vehicles first.
