Puma Gearbox Question
Hi all,

Been noticing recently that there is a 'grating' when upshifting from 2nd to 3rd. On a long downhill, I tested by leaving the clutch in and simulating upshifts and downshifts. There is a definite grating between the gears, particularly so between 2nd & 3rd, and less so between 4th & 6th.

Is this something I should have seen to urgently or can it wait until end of Jan for the service? Any indication of what it could be?

thanks!

I would think on the clutch or maybe somebody add a wrong oil (GL-5). Puma 110" SW

The landy only has 13500km on the odo, gearbox never been opened.

Someone suggested the synchro is out of synch?

Not really, you can only notice the grinding when speed > 40kmh

There is a service call (or similar) where LR addresses the problems with the syncrhos and how to change them. If that is the problem then you either get new synchros or a remanufactered Gbox. A qualitative oil analsysis should tell also.

But I would be more inclined to expect a problem with the clucth. At least make the point asap to the stealer. Puma 110" SW

My indie took a ride with me in the landy this morning.

He says the 3rd gear is loose and sliding on the shaft, hence the big 'clunk' when I shift into 3rd. Reckons it's not the synchro nor the clutch, cos all the other gears sound find but can only be confirmed by opening the box and seeing what's going on.

Now to deal with the inept stealers at LR N1 City Confused

Just to update you guys on this query I posted a while ago:

Landy just came back from its first service - took it to LR Stellenbosch, who I found most helpful compared to N1 City. At least they are willing to listen and not dismiss things outright like that p**phole Gustav!

I asked them to check the gearbox for the clunking. Their take is that the rear propshaft was not properly tightened, which is also what N1 City tells me everytime I took it there. However, unlike N1 City, they do admit the backlash is a bit pronounced, but 'normal'.

Does this mean the propshaft is coming lose all the time? Shocked

If so, what could be the issue? Rear diff?

Maybe you need to adjust the crown and pinion. BUt if that would be the case, then you should (almost all the time) have a whinning sound.

You can not tell if the gearbox has a backlash problem unless you take the driveline apart. Did they take the propshaft away? Puma 110" SW

They did indeed. And retightened everything and the backlash is much reduced.

I am spending a day at my local indie workshop next week and we will re-route all breathers and go over the whole drivetrain with a fine toothcomb.
