Tuning to remove smoke
The Hulk currently smokes like a chimney on anything other than a light throttle and I'm very keen to clean it up. He's had the EGR removed and a straight through exhaust fitted by the PO but I don't know what's been done to the fuel pump.

I've got several 'how to' guides which are great but all start with the premise of marking the original position so that settings can be returned. The trouble is I don't want to return these settings because they're clearly not right. I suspect someone has had a go at it and got it wrong. Is there any guidance for a starting position which isn't factory standard? Mid Life; Live It!

Unfortunately there is no way to reset to factory settings without all the build information for the pump and vehicle. A diesel specialist can do this but obviously will charge you. You can get the 'settings' off a known standard pump (i.e. so many threads showing on this screw etc. etc.) but it's not a true reset as each pump will have slightly different settings.

In your position you can have a go at changing the settings, however you'll still want to mark to be able to return to the current setting regardless of whether it is 'right' or not. I'd start with the fuelling screw on the rear of the pump, this sets the overall fuelling level and so black smoke on any throttle position suggests this is set too high. Adjust that so as to lessen the fuelling slightly and see what happens.

I'm not sure if it's in or out to lessen the fuelling on that screw - I've never adjusted the settings on my vehicles, can't see the point personally.

if you look at the diaphragm it will prob have the fuel metering pin marks on the side of it from the original position. Cheers
