I've had my 2010 Defender 90 2.4 remapped by Alive (It's just great to drive now ) I noticed it's running slightly hotter now mapped although this isn't really a problem to me but I was wondering if it would affect the longevity of the engine, pipes or parts? Should I fit an intercooler and if I do will it make any difference? Also would there be any noticeable power?? 2010 Defender 90 HT

It already has one but it may be worth looking at an uprated one.
There are lots of suppliers but alive do them so might be worth getting in touch and seeing what they can do. Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

That's interesting - I've given my 2.2 the 170 BAS remap and the temp hasn't moved one jot - and doesn't when working hard either My TD5, on the other hand, moved up by the width of the needle but again remained constant no matter what the work load.
It'd be nice to know what rise in temperature has actually occurred I guess!! |

BB - the temperature gauge on the clocks is measuring coolant temperature.
An intercooler is used to cool the air entering the engine which has originally come from the exhaust/turbo. So in short it's not an intercooler you are after, although I can't see why your coolant would be running hotter after the tune? Where is the needle sitting in relation to the temp gauge? |

The intercooler is used to cool the charge of air from the turbo (which can be incredibly hot) before it enters the cylinders so increasing the density of air and the amount of fuel that can be burnt with it (more power). The better the IC the cooler the charge of air which in turn can potentially reduce the coolant temperature as it has less heat to dissipate.
I say potentially because if the charge air is cooler it is also more dense - - more fuel can be burnt efficiently developing more power - - engine works harder generating more heat!!! It's like a heat merry-go-round |

Are you sure its not an illusion that she is running hotter? As you are not able to see it on the temp gauge.
Temp gauge is balanced w unlike on the tdi's where it did properly show the temperature. Between 73C and 98C the temp gauge will stay in the middle and only if she gets really hot and goes into limp mode the temp gauge raises to the top, not really anything in between. So to summarize pretty useless peace of equipment. I would recommend you looking at an Ultragauge, this connects to the OBD connector and shows the actual coolant temperature, only way to properly keep track of it. Uprated intercooler is definitely a recommendation with the remap, however it won't change the cooling situation. |

I've been in touch with Alive they said it will run slightly hotter due to the engine working harder with the new map (it is only about the width of the temp needle to be fair) However might be good excuse to up-rate the intercooler What extra BHP will that give me??? 2010 Defender 90 HT

Excellent explanation. I don't have tune, as yet, but have been advised that down here in Aussie, an intercooler is very adviseable with a tune, because of the high ambient temps encountered here, which will be an issue if you were using the full potential of your tune/working the engine hard etc, on a hot day. On a comparable journey recently of two 110s, both loaded same, kit, racks, roof tents as near as, same tyres and both towing, both remapped, same company, but different lumps. 2.4 and 2.2 on a long motorway climb2miles? The 2.4 which had 500kg more in trailer ran 10deg coolant temp lower than 2.2. The 2.4 had uprated intercooler. Cheers

Use a good coolant too, certainly WSM spec.
When my coolant was getting towards the end of its long service life my temp was more or less bang on half was on the gauge. After using Inugel Optimal on my 2.4 as a premix. (Not concentrate) It was lower by about a needles width. But as mentioned the EGT is very different from coolant temp. Engine temp in my opinion will only be governed by how hard it's driven mapped or not. Granted with a map you can push it harder as the extra power is there. That said, you don't have to constantly, I especially don't in anything lower than 3rd gear if I can help it. But it does go to show the coolant its self and how it's mixed can have differing effects on temp, it's what keeps engine temp down after all. Regardless of the Waterpump I changed at the time I am glad that I changed the majority of the coolant too as it did bring it down. Only downside is premix is more expensive, but if it's your pride and joy is it not worth it? Trouble is most garages will probably shove in what ever is cheapest, even though it doesn't need changing for a fair few years, |

to throw something else into the mix
i run two tgvs in 90s. i moved the VV turbo pressure feed pipe from the std position (immediately after the compressor side of turbo) to the back of the inlet manifold. so now the vanes change due to pressure at the inlet rather than at exit of turbo so it accounts for losses in pipework. Both vehicles are pump tweaked this was not changed when above mod was done. (std 300tdi) power and driveability improved on both, EGT is down and running cooler eng temp too, plus no more black smoke. same fuel going in for any accelerator position but more air. As per my post on another thread, I visited Bowler a few weeks back and on viewing their stock of Intercooler upgrades, posed the very same question. Interestingly they said that the standard Intercooler on the Defender is, in their opinion, perfectly suitable for most remaps. They only modify theirs when going above 170bhp or if being used in extreme conditions (rallying, hot, dusty or high altitude environments). For 170bhp remap and road use, apparently the OE Intercooler is more than up to the job. That's obviously their opinion and much like a***h***s, everyone has got one. But given their provenance, worth baring in mind before spaffing 500 quid plus labour on something that might not be entirely necessary. Imagine how much beer that would buy....
