Wipers have the clap
Every time my windscreen wipers change direction they make this awful clapping noise against the screen, it drives me mad to the point I mostly try and drive without using them Shocked I can put up with most other noises on the old girl but the monotony of noisy windscreen wipers is worse than anything.

I have replaced the blades, tried adjusting the angle of the blade, is it a case of TADTS or is there some trick to get them to shut up?

New wheelboxes and a new drive cable might help.

Lift the wipers off the screen, see if there is free play between the two wheelboxes or if the play is at the motor.

If at the motor do a search and find the thread on removing the motor by easing the dash away at the right (Blackwolfs IIRC) and you'll probably find the circlip has fallen off the crank on the motor, enabling the bush to fall out and cause the wipers to hit at both side and base of the screen.

New gear assembly.new park switch whilst its out, loads of grease on re installation & silent (almost) wipers

Reviving an older thread, but today I found that my wipers are also playing up. They've been making the 'clapping' noise for a while but I've been "quietly" ignoring it - but this morning I discovered after not using them for a long while, they didn't have enough 'oomph' to move the blades across the screen, in addition to not parking them at the bottom of the screen anymore.

After a little helping with my hand, they seem to have free'd up a bit, but clearly they need some TLC. As I don't have the luxery of a second car, I need to order all parts up front before pulling the dash out, and there is where I'm coming a little unsure.

For a 2005 Defender Td5, it looks like I need:

(1) Wiper drive cable
(2) 2 x wiper wheelbox
(3) New park switch

Is there anything else I might need. other than grease and a full day to tackle the job?

Also, where do you guys suggest ordering from? I usually use a mix of Paddocs, Craddocks, D44, local specialist and ebay. Is there anywhere else where I can get some quality parts from (preferably OEM spec, not in a blue box!)

Order them from Land Rover.

Aftermarket wiper components are generally sh**e in my experience.

Dan at Duckworths (LR dealer) offers a good discount to forum members.

I bought genuine parts wheelboxes and wiper rack from Dan for my soft top a few months ago and it's transformed the clunky wipers.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I done a full write up on the subject on my 90. I don't know how to add links, but the subject was called "Wiper replacement 2004 model". Have a search for that and you shouldn't go far wrong. I didn't need a parking switch though, but you might find the arms are flopping about and that they are not stopping where they should due to skipping on the worn teeth in the wheelboxes? I purchased from Dan at Duckworth, doing such a long (but very straightforward) job I wouldn't takes a chance on after market parts - do it properly, do it once. Read my post, it should reveal all.
Hope this helps, Roddy.

Brilliant help as I have come to expect on this forum, thanks so much gentlemen. Dan will be getting a call in the week. Bow down

Now to sit down with a cuppa and digest Roddy's guide. I just hope my aircon fan bar thingh does not complicate matters.

Had my noisy wiper motor replaced under warranty last week. Job looks easy enough but just time consuming, it took my local JLR dealer a day and a half to do it. They loaned me a RR Evoque for two days - not a single waive from other Evoque drivers!!! Top of the range with lots of toys to play with but totally lacked character. Defender 90XS SW
