Hello
What sort of journeys are you doing in it? I would want something at least Golf sized from a safety / space point of view. so Yearly millage Journey type is it just to work and back? budget |

75 miles a day only to work & back only ( Landies for the weekend) and budget upto £6k ish... Working towards Carry on camping!

Do you have any past history with any makes you like? I used to have some Golfs so they would be high on my list. Good solid safe car and 60mpg. Also BMW 118d ? Or if you choice something less rep mobile, like this you seem to get a lot for your money and lower miles. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2008-58-MAZDA-3-...SwbYZXUMWZ Doing that millage I guess your on motorways I would like something slightly bigger than a fiesta, also use Honest Johns or similar as the MPG claimed in say an autotrader car is nothing like the real world. My wife had a Hyundai i30 diesel after the Range Rover died and before we got the Defender. In comparison running costs were virtually nothing, 50+mpg, £30 road tax, cheap insurance. It was a good car, a little plastically but perfectly acceptable and had all the mod cons. Bought a year old for £8k with 4 years manufacturer warranty still on it, kept 3 years and sold for £6 still with 1year original warranty. Cheap motoring! James

I have a 118d 58 plate M sport, they can be purchased for the sort of money you have, had it since new and thrashed it most of the time although it has a full BMW history I change the oil between services and use good quality 2SO from new
it always makes me smile as it is quite quick 60 in 8 and 130 flat out and despite what people say about runflats tram lining mine is like a go-cart 42mpg urban driving, £30 road tax in 82k only issues i've had are water pump and rear shocks, is on 3rd set of brake pads from new and 4th set of tyres which all wear out at the same time so cost £500 (if buying run flats mine is m sport so tyres are more expensive) on a run at 70+ mph it does about 45-50 mpg if you poodle along at about 60 mph it does 65mpg and I did a 115 mile trip Brum to Machy managing 70mpg average ( but to was hard work feathering the throttle that much, for comparison the landy did 34mpg on the same route also driving gingerly) be aware however that this engine is known for breaking cam chains which are on the flywheel end of the engine result if this happens is a new engine however most rattle for a long time first so can be replaced before failure (expensive engine out job) and some of these cars have done high mileage with no issues at all if I had to replace it and wanted cheaper motoring (but less fun) I would look at a Fiesta, Polo, or Cleo all have good MPG and are economical with cheaper tyres etc , a sporty Golf or BMW will however be more fun DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy Last edited by LR90XS2011 on 11th Jun 2016 7:15am. You wont go far wrong with your initial thought of a Fiesta.
I have one as a company vehicle and to be honest I cant really fault it. I have the Titanium which has a decent spec with pretty much every gadget you need to be comfortable - Phone, satnav, cruise, auto lights, auto wipers, climate control, USB etc etc. MPG is 55+ I have a 16 plate with the 1.5 Tdci. Previously I had the 1.6tdci which i think pulled just a little bit better. |

Something with a PD130 engine.
Bit older, but I use my Ibiza to do 65+ miles a day. Comfy, 45mpg, none of that DPF crap. Bullet proof engine, quick and generally a nice little car! |

Dad's had Fiestas as hire cars when his car has been broken and was dreading the motorway miles but got on fine.
Just a slight other option though... 75 miles is well within the range of most electric cars. 75 miles at 50MPG works out at about £7.50 diesel per day or heading on for £2000 per year. With an electric you'd do that in something like £4-500 electricity so saving £1500, you'd save on the road tax and with something like the Leaf a main dealer service is only £90 and you get an 8 year all in warranty. Headline price is higher which is obviously going to be an issue but you can lease them. Over all though, it works out as very cheap commuting motoring and they're really nice to drive as well. Over the course of an 8 year warranty on a Leaf I reckon you'd be saving something in the order of £15,000 in costs, and you get the nice little things like getting up in the morning to find your car warm and defrosted in the winter. Other EVs are available  |

I ran a Seat Ibiza TDI for many years, the FR version had some real go and still gave nearly 60 mpg.
Same engine as in the Audi and VW equivalents. Pretty bulletproof. Only changed it to get my Defender. 1970 Series 2A 88" |

Exactly my thoughts - i've had 4 cars with these 1.9 PD engines and they're both pokey and bulletproof. The most fun was the last one - a 55 plate Skoda Fabia vRS - complete hoot to drive, 55 mpg even when hounded, lovely gearbox and handled nicely if a little nose-heavy. Gets my vote  |

Worth looking at Mini One Diesel, 60+MPG, Fiesta/Focus econetics 70+ MPG, Toyota IQ or Aygo diesel, personall I prefer to sit higher up especially on dual carriageway or motorways so Honda CRV diesel 40+ MPG and reliable, plus residuals worth noting Jumped ship to reliability - Mitsubishi L200

We had from new and recently sold a Fiesta 1.4tdci, 50plus to the gallon all day long and achieved 60mpg a few times, £20 a year road tax, nippy enough, lots of useful stuff inside, hands free phone that also connect ya I tunes through the stereo and all that jazz, hearted screens n mirrors,
For a std car we quite enjoyed it, sold ours for £5k Good luck |
