I'm in the early stages of considering a mid-winter journey from London to Kittila in North Finland.
I'll want regular tyres for the beginning of the trip, winter tyres (from the approved list) for the middle of the trip and studded winter tyres by the time I get near to Kittila (and snow-chains for any adventures). I'd obviously rather not have to carry a whole set of wheels & tyres with me so I'm wondering: Would the best compromise be to get studdable tyres such as Cooper ST Maxx and screw the studds in on the way then remove them on the way home? Alternatively, if I had studded tyres from the outset ( http://www.tyres-pneus-online.co.uk/car-ty...tta-7-suv/ ) would the studds be worn out by the time I got to the ice-covered roads? |

It's a shame you don't seem to be able to get the Cooper AT/W in the UK, it seems like it would be pretty much exactly what you're after.

I used 235/70 16 106 Nokian Hakkapellitta R2 tyres when I went up there, new generation arctic studless tyre, no problems in snow with them, would take snow/ice chains next time as did 30km on sheet ice which was a little slippy.

You can't drive stuffed tyres legally on UK roads from what I understand Cheers

Hi from Finland!
I think you might need studded tyres all the way here in wintertime. In my opinion Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT2 are best wintertyres ever. Have had these in my last 10 defenders so far. I can ask if someone could rent these so you don't have to buy one. What is your route? |

Only used in the UK but have them Nokians on my 110 CSW did Xmass New Year in West coast of Scotland and the Outer Hebrides and got to say they are so good they are dangerous as you forget your driving on sheet ice and snow till you stop at a shop and their surprised you made it through that road !! Done about 3k miles and the 100% mark has just worn off.
