Agree with the above - if you can't afford a brand new decent bike, go second hand rather than cheap new from Halfords etc.

Type in 29er in ebay and there are a few choices which could suit your budget.....

Good luck Thumbs Up

If you have the money go for Orange - absolutely love them
Avoid Halfords, although the Voodoo has always had a good write up from them, they are cheaper because Halfords kept the sizes available right down
eBay for a second hand Specialized

Avoid full Sus as you are adding weight and costs for something you will never use, unless you are getting into full downhill
Stick with front forks only, talk to your local bike dealer and ask at least three different shops

ex Hire and end of year sales are your best bet
My Son has a Specialized Hardrock, nice and cheap in case it got nicked and that was second hand from the freebie newspaper

Last thoughts

I spend a fortune on mine but then keep them for ten years
Get the best frame you can and then upgrade the bits over time, Specialized Stumpjumper used to be a good frame to add bits to

Its like owning a Defender, you can mod as you go

If you want cheap, go for the Hardrock Disc
The 2016 version of the Stumpjumper if you want something more

Then the world is your oyster, mine is an Orange P7, £1500 basic and then £1000 of upgrades
It will last ten years plus so works out at £250 a year

But please - avoid cable disk brakes! they are not that good, they are not the future and they are just calling to be dinked thus needing new disks.

+1 voting FOR cable disks - they have significant advantages. Modern, good quality ones (such as Avid Mechanicals) have loads of power and feel... easy to adjust and simple to maintain.

Agree with other posters - some shops sell ex-rental bikes with new consumable parts (chain, brake pads etc) - they can make an awesome buy Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

IMHO any new bike much under £400 new will be hefty with low quality components.

If you don't want to use Gumtree / Ebay / local paper...Try ex-hire...such as...:
http://www.deanforestcycles.co.uk/exhirebikes.html

My bikes are all "evolved"... pick up wheels etc, swap frames, forks etc.

I'm also still on 26". 29'ers seem to have come and gone... 27.5 seems to be the main size now. As above - won't be changing from 26" anytime soon. Tried a 29'er (my road/cross bikes are 29'er (or 700c)) and I think they have as many disadvantages as advantages off-road. Whilst a 29'er rolls better, it's less nimble IMHO (with weaker wheels).

You could always send a PM to GREENI - he seems to be in the trade (or connected as a minimum) Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Just sold my Decathalon RockRider dual sus bike for £170 to a local young lad.......

I have a 27.5" (650B) Haibike Sduro Hard7 eBike, but that's £1800ish......

The bigger front wheel gives you better stability. This is why off road motorcycles tend to have a 21" front wheel and most sports bike 16" - 18" front wheels for quicker stearing. Cheers Don.

Likeomg, I'd be interested in an ex hire. I assume end of season would be September/October? James

yeah the bikes i posted above are 27.5 / 650b.

26" is basically dead now, i ride a 27.5 for all mountain / enduro racing and have a 29er xc hardtail for training... the 29er pedals like you wouldn't believe... it does also weight sub 23lbs.. Shocked

if i was to pack in all the expensive bikes, id aim for a 27.5 hardtail with decent running gear... exactly like what i've posted

skip to 2:20 in this video and its the hire bikes being tested by me and my cousins when we decided to go with merida...
http://www.pinkbike.com/video/403401/ they ride good.

yeah, usually start selling off first week of sept.

most of them are just used down a disused railway line by tourists so don't see much abuse lol.

Thanks MartinK, I do work in the cycle trade for an on-line shop.... I've raced/crashed bikes for over 30 years!!! (though don't ride a lot anymore, just a little) so I'm paid for my knowledge!

We don't really sell bikes under £400 as they really are more trouble than they are worth...people expect them to do more than they're made for.

Reading your original post, if you're hardly going to use it and keep other junk in the shed company, I'd look at ebay, or even better, yard sales or car boot sales, at least you can check them out in the flesh before pulling the trigger.
However Halfords do sell bikes that fit your requirements, though as everyone else has said 'approach with caution'....even better, go to your local independent shop.

I'm happy to advise!

Just a quick question if I may?

Are Land Rover branded bikes and good. I was thinking of getting a new bike but it's a mine field

Cheers

I have a 2008 LR Khartoum - can't say I ride it regularly any more, as it's not the lightest thing or hugely special, but I do like it. Smile Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK
