I'm getting that chukka, chukka, chukka sound so i know the EGR valve is on its way out. But other than the red warning light being permanently on, is there any problem just letting it eventually die and just doing nothing about it (no blanking etc)? I get the impression the EGR isn't strictly necessary. Am I missing something? Cheers. 1998 RR HSE

If it fails open you'll get all manner of running problems, if it fails shut the engine will run better. In the UK, the red light on the dash is an MOT test failure, however.
The current UK MOT test will not detect the the correct operation of the EGR, so if you have it disabled in a remap you will pass the MOT, but the MIL (warning light) being on will result in failure. (On a TD5, in theory removing the EGR altogether may cause a failure, but only if the tester notices. On the TDCi the EGR is left physically in place so this risk doesn't exist). I am not sure of the position down under, so cannot advise on in this respect. |
