Got involved in a "tractor run" today. The reason I was allowed in was simple. I said that the series 111 had pto facilities and that it was noisey. It was in aid of a cancer service.

I enjoyed it. Average speed was between 10 -15 mph so I had no bother keeping up with the main convoy! Still it is not everyday that you can be in a line of traffic basking in the knowledge that your series 111 is the fastest vehicle there
Tractor people are as capable and as willing to talk about their machines as are Land Rover people. I specifically said "tractor people" as it was not all males involved. There were some girls there, some women there, and some "female types" who appeared to be perfectly capable of effecting an engine swap in the series 111 without having recourse to a workshop and it's lifting gear! Formidable indeed. I would just like to pick up on a couple of points though. Not all tractors have PTOs, some of the big draught work ones don't. And not all tractors are noisy, you get in a modern one and it could teach a Defender a thing or two. Climate control, cab and seat suspension, quiet, controls placed sensibly...  |

CVTs are really wonderful things. Floor the pedal, the revs just stay at peak power (or peak efficiency, or peak torque depending on what you set) and the transmission does the rest. Put a power harrow on the back and the ground speed will gradually increase until the engine revs start to droop, at which point the transmission will hold it, until the ground changes and it will vary the speed to suit the load. Or if you need a fixed speed, you can do that too. It really is very stress free.
Set up the hydraulics properly and with the press of a button (or the input from a GPS unit) a whole sequence of things will magically happen behind you. All well and good until the hydraulics ECU goes belly up and you get a £1600 bill for its replacement we've just got our big Fendt back from having that done. Still, it's done 10k hours so that's not too bad. |
