Cheers Mick Thumbs Up

seems the lilliput USB screens are limited to 1 metre cable length to provide the power, so I guess the screen needs its own power. www.fit-pc.co.uk is interesting.

Looks all good advice/information and really welcome, like to say thanks to everyone for all the information so far.
Discocuzzy, any chance of more details of your system, sounds like it matches what I'm looking for. Does it or is it WiFi enabled to pickup email while travelling? John

I have used a gps dongle on my laptop thrown on the passenger seat running microsoft autoroute but i am waiting for a decent windows touch screen tablet to be launched and acer have a decent 10" screen version being launched this spring. sit that up on the dash easy to remove and easy to use even have a 3g dongle running and use google street map or any web based system If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

I am running a Panasonic Toughbook (small one)

Both a tablet (touch screen) and laptop (nothing worse than trying to write emails/ long messages with a tablet).

Has built in GPS which works with memory map, Fugawi, Microsoft autoroute, and a couple of others.

Has built in internet thing (take the SIM out of dongle and plug it straight into computer).

When I have time I plan on mounting it between the air vents (take the 2 inner ones and the clock out and install a mating plate so that it is an easy in and out.

The other reason for using this is becasue I know how strong it is (I had it out on the ground iN Afghan for 4 months) and I can't stand having to plug GPS, Dongle, power cable and other things in all the time.

I would be interested in your dash mount as im still debating options.

Bar far I think the IPad is ideal for this application...but as mentioned, whether an in car PC, Netbook, Laptop etc car mounting is a massive "issue"

So many options and locations - the defender is more limited, but still there are a massive number of options and issues. Mike

Just a couple of basic ones:

http://ipadcarmount.co.uk/carmounts.html

Another example

Reveiew of the pro-clip one

They look quite good to be honest. Pro-clip (brodit) do a couple of clip on mounts for the Puma dash but because we generally don't mind drilling holes, a custom bracket will put it exactly where you want it and this mount will hold it.

The great thing about the iPad is the battery life is so long you don't need to worry so much about powered holders. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS

Thanks - ive seen those...ill do some more thinking/looking into them - are you using on?...im going backwards and forwards with options

Ive seen a great twin suction up version - but the arm isnt that long and its all about clamping the pad to the bracket/when the thing finished

Then there is one (could be brodit) but there locations are over the vents and the size of the unit means its just going to get hot air blown on it if it will actually fit!

Then there is off roading...i dont want £700 of i pad to fall

Open to real experiences Mike

The lilliput touch screen mount fits on the little ledge above the clock.....suction mounts tend to bounce them selves off the window off road.
