On our UK tour, driving up on the M3 from the south coast we've just encountered what I think is the turbo hose problem. 2012 2.2, 65000 Km. I need some help to pinpoint where the leak is. A sudden drop in power was accompanied by a hissing noise (rushing air, like ventilation on full) from the near side of the engine. Orange warning light has lit up. I pulled over, and found a quiet spot to locate the leak and temporarily fix it with duct tape. However, I cannot find any damage on either the hose from the turbo to the intercooler (strengthened version fitted by dealer a while back) or the hose running back from the intercooler to the intake . The noise is definitely near side and builds up with the turbo. We have limped on to our over night stay near Winchester, and will attack the problem tomorrow morning.
Any suggestions as to where else I should be looking? Secondly, is there a LR dealer or a capable indi somewhere near to Winchester or on the way across towards Crawley? Thanks for any suggestions. Thanks for the suggestion Richard. After another delve under the hood tomorrow at first light, I'll get in touch with Keith. I hope to find a split hose and source a replacement that is immediately available. Fingers crossed!

Self amalgamating tape can be used to successfully repair a split boost hose! I have such a repair on my daily, and that runs about 20PSI of boost.

Thanks for reminding me of C4x4! Also on route for us. I haven't found the hole yet. Pressure builds up in the hose when revving the motor (without load). It is as though it holds a certain amount of pressure and then lets go of it with a rushing sound. There has to be a split there somewhere..... 1998 Tdi 90 SW,

Hi Stephen.
I had the same symptoms as you last year. It turned out to be a split hose and a split in the intercooler. Luckily for me it was repaired under warranty at Guy Salmons in Portsmouth. They have always given me good service so you could try them as they aren't too far from you. Dave. |

I'll try the water spray trick and see if the fairy helps 👍😊.
Thanks for the advice and support.👍👍👍 1998 Tdi 90 SW, 2008 Td4 90 SW, 2012 2.2 90 SW, 2" raised Trailmaster/Terrafirma Heavy Track Raids, 255 MTīs, Recaro CSīs, anorak, wellingtons |

Have you taken all the hoses off and looked inside? Hoses can delaminate internally.

The guys at Keith Gott were on it only minutes after our arrival. They diagnosed that it was the elbow shaped hose that connects to the intake manifold. On a LHD quite difficult to access, buried below a number of cooling hoses and the brake servo. Once removed, it was easy to see an inch long split on the outside of the bend. Nigel got his hands dirty while we sat in the office and had a cuppa! Thanks fellas, and well done to the team at KG!
Power is back, we're rolling and still on schedule👍👍👍👍😀😀😀 1998 Tdi 90 SW, 2008 Td4 90 SW, 2012 2.2 90 SW, 2" raised Trailmaster/Terrafirma Heavy Track Raids, 255 MTīs, Recaro CSīs, anorak, wellingtons |

That is the favourite place for them to go! On my previous Defender (300 TDI) there was a split you could fit your hand in, but the inner layer was still just about intact, however when the engine was running it would coliapse almost completely blocking the pipe!
Silicone hoses are considered more resilient against delamination and I will be changing the hoses on my Defender shortly. |

Looking at it, it has to be the weak spot! I will be ordering a set of silicone hoses to fit at a later date.
What a fantastic forum this is. We couldn't have solved the issue in less time. The guys at Keith Gott were short staffed and fully booked, but gave us to emergency status treatment. Thankyou Richard for putting us on to them. Having lunch as planned, in Farnham. I'll post pics once we get back home on Sunday. 1998 Tdi 90 SW, 2008 Td4 90 SW, 2012 2.2 90 SW, 2" raised Trailmaster/Terrafirma Heavy Track Raids, 255 MTīs, Recaro CSīs, anorak, wellingtons |
