I'm sure an iPad would do the job .. http://www.about-electronics.eu/2010/06/11...3-preview/

Neville,
Thanks for the input, I'll look at memory map. Most of my travelling is Poland, Romania and shortly Russia so I need to be careful about chosing the right software. John |

If I used that where I travel, they would shoot me for it, very nice though. I need to have something more compact. I did see one setup that had a touchscreen on the dash, I think I need something similar. John

assuming you have a GPS receiver, any netbook/laptop will do. Then you have options like memory map which is pretty good.
if its for driving on road rather than offroad you cant go wrong with a garmin 1690. Iin fact even offroad its pretty good combined with topo maps. Note though that topo maps are not as detailed as OS maps, but are useful to show terrain. |

You will probably need Fugawi or Garmin Nroute for Russia and eastern Europe.
I have a Car PC with a Global sat waterproof USB gps with a programm called franson gate enabled so i can alt tab between programs (mem map, Nroute, garmin sat nav for PC) You will find most GPS recievers are manufacturer software specific so the above allows you to spoof the software into thinking you have the correct one. PC mounted in the bottom of a mobile storage systems cubby box attached to a 10" liliput touch screen on the dash. Also enables all your Itunes library and DVDs to be viewed, plus a rear view camera fitted if required. Neat job, touch screen easily removed and stored in the seat pockets when not in use...you can lose the rear view mirror as well You cannot teach stupid people to do clever things |

sounds like a very cool set up disco. is your rear camera via USB or something else? I'm a bit tired of not being able to see directly behind when I have full load

Yep just a reversing camera up on the rack with a direct feed into the touch screen, just have to play with the cable routes to get it to the dash...i just ran mine through a gromet above the rear door and then under all the carpets, under the cubby and up behind the dash You cannot teach stupid people to do clever things

^ good point, not much room in a defender...have seen the laptop mounted on the passenger side with a remote screen for the driver...also works well but is a bit to in view for my liking. You cannot teach stupid people to do clever things
