IS the noise the same when the vehicle is both under load and on overrun and have you tried knocking it into neutral when you are going along so that it's just coasting and seeing if it still whines then?
I'd check the easy things first like fluid levels, Check the prop uj's & lubricate, check the transmission brake isn't binding, wheel bearings etc. Steve. I know the wheel bearing are fine , Diff oil checked 3 weeks ago, same sound both under load and on over run.
I can still remember the last time I free wheeled a vehicle, 1970 , Chimney Bank, Rosedale , change of undergarments for all occupants, non servo and only shoes for brakes which got hot and faded. I'll give it try on more level ground. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |

Sounds strange (IMHO) for it to sound the same both under load and on over-run. Did you inspect the oil when you dropped it? For the cost of it I'd drop the oil again and look for debris / particles.
Rear diff' certainly isn't a difficult thing to change so you could save plenty of £££s by DIY |

If you want to determine if its the front or rear diff, put the car in diff lock, then remove the front propshaft and go for a drive. Then replace the front and remove the rear propshaft. If the noise is there when only one of the propshafts is removed then you know that the diff which is still connected is the problem. If its there during both then look elsewhere. 1995 300tdi Defender 90 P/UP

Had the same issue last week (8000miles) with mine, the dealer was convinced it was the wheel bearing protesting but ended up changing the half shafts and the bearing.
All fixed. |

Rear diff' is expensive but not a huge job (just because of LR parts costs) - front diff' is a little more involved. Personally, unless it was done under warranty I wouldn't consider LR parts - I'd go straight to Ashcrofts

Sorry folks I have not been ignoring the replies just to busy.
I know its the back as my ears tell me so. I have checked with both of them. Its still there when the wife gets out. The mother in law died some 20 years ago so it cannot be her. The diff oil was nearly as clean as it was when I put it in 6 months ago. The only other time I have heard such a noise was from an army truck tyres. I may swap front and rear tyres to see if the noise then comes from the front. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |

I had a strange whining noise which was very hard to pick where from on my 2010 110 a couple of years back. Sounded a bit like bag pipes .... which I like generally but not from under the vehicle.
I picked rear diff, cook reckoned engine and someone else said gearbox. Took it back to the stealers for a check while other warranty stuff was being fixed and they said transfer box. That was at 98K kilometres. At that mileage (kilometerage?) they would normally have changed it for a recon box but as none were available in Oz they put a new one in. Noise gone and I was happy vegemite...... for a while. AlanH. |

Well I tried the free wheel and the noise is still there. The noise is only noticeable above 15 M.P.H. and it dose not matter what gear it is in. Its got me beat so its off to an Independent next week to see if they can locate the source. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Well just an update............Been to have the 110 looked at, not repair yet. It appears that the noise is coming from the rear diff and the conclusion is that it is the pinion bearing (the bearing on the input side). Don't make old people mad.
