Did I just get royally ripped off at the JLR Service Center?
Hi guys/gals,

not sure how much you guys spend for this in the UK but, I think I got ripped off badly at the JLR Service Center today.

£70 for motor oil (7litres of 5w30)
£67 for labor (2hrs)
£13.3 for oil filter
£6.3 for oil drain plug
£50.4 for the air filter
£62.4 for the fuel filter

for a total of £285 inclusive of taxes.

this is for 80k regular service for a 2010 Defender TDCI 2.4 in Malaysia

so.. did I get screwed?

You're just teasing us Europeans, aren't you? £67 for two hours labour at a main dealer? The average across the UK is higher than that per hour, and in London almost double. Individual dealer rates can be as high as £200/hr in London +VAT!!!

Our local dealer in France is 130€+VAT per hour.

As for the oil, it's about £25-35 per five litres of oil in the UK, main brands, a little more in France. So you might have paid a little over. You should have popped to Petronas HQ and got some...

If the fuel and oils filters are genune LR, that sounds about right, the air filter (unless K&N) sounds steep.

All in all, for a main dealer service, I think you've done bloody well. Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....

Not cheap on for a TDCi. And this is Paddock. Imagine the mark up at a stealer:

I just spent £80 on genuine LR filters plus another £120 on oils to do the engine, transfer, diffs, gearbox... That's £200 without any labour!

wow golly, I guess labor here is cheap cheap cheap! makes me wanna go there and service Land Rovers Very Happy (mentally tips the grease monkeys who just worked on my defender)

But yea, I kinda suspected the parts were a rip-off. They were either hyper Fedex'ed in from the UK while I was waiting or they really are gold-plated.

I just found out you could pretty much order your own complete Service Kit for so much less. I'm pretty handy with a car like, changing the battery, tires, fuses etc.
Anyone recommend servicing their own Defender or should I really leave it to a pro?

Seems pretty normal for a main dealer service. Good price on the labour mind.

I priced up all the oils in anther thread and then all the filters etc.

It was around £135 in oils and £70 in filters, so £205 just for the bits...

Asked my local independent who have themselves a TD5 and older Range rover. They buy oil in huge drums so the cost is lower..they did

Engine Oil Change
Gearbox oil Change
Transfer Oil Change
Diffs front and back oil change
New oil filter
New air filter
New Fuel Filter

£150 cash done Smile

I did mine. Fairly easy, couple of fiddly moments, but all on YouTube so easy to follow. It is better if you can get the Def on a lift. But at £67, I'd save yourself the hassle and stick with the dealer. Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

I think I'd invest in a decent torque wrench give self-servicing a go. Always wanted to get a little closer with my vehicles and learn the ropes. Youtube is such an amazing resource.

I guess I reacted horribly to the bill coz I'm so used to sending my other pickup (shh.. it's japanese). It costs me between 43 to 50 pounds to service albeit 4 times a year.

gotta find one of these independent shops. Loads of Defenders in the hills. I doubt they would care about the big service centers.
