Chirping like a nest full of hungry chicks!
My GF's 90 (300TDi) is making a very strange noise when on the move and under load. It can only be described as a chirping noise related to road speed but a much higher frequency than the revolution of the road wheels. By 30mph it sounds like a trimphone and it appears to be coming from everywhere!! It's not there at constant speed or on the over-run.

I suspect it's one of the UJs on the shafts coming from the transfer box but would appreciate any other thoughts. I've seen threads about clunking UJs but this isn't a harsh mechanical sound. It's very distinct (and very loud) but it doesn't sound 'heavy' so I don't think it's too serious. Mid Life; Live It!

I can only go off my noise, I had two...


1) a ping when moving slowly in forward and reverse.
2) A Rattle in 1st 2nd and 3rd, generally under power or when you lift off the accelerator. Sounded like a heat shield?


Both apparently were down to a worn rear prop shaft joint, £38 part plus fitting.

I've not collected car yet but will report back once driven Smile

It's almost definitely a U/J.

If it is it is serious!

I would take the prop off, and drive with diff lock on until it's changed.
If it goes completely the prop will bang about damaging everything it hits.

Ahem.. I speak from experience here.

If the front one goes it could enter the cabin by you feet , although I've never seen a picture of it , so it might just be an old wives tale.
It's easy to check, just lay underneath a wobble the prop if there's any up or down, or side to side movement then it's had it.

It's also easy to change. The first time it takes ages, but once you've done it, it's an easy 1/2hr job. Or you could just replace the whole prop as they're quite cheap. 2002 td5 90 county hardtop

Mine was this on the rear of the prop the bearing had started coming lose and generally it looks ca broken Smile

Sounds like a prop UJ.

When replacing, spend a few quid more and get a decent make (GNK or hardy spicer) with grease nipple. It might also be a good idea to get under and measure the UJ across the spider from cup-to-cup to ensure you get the right size UJ. Twice (I know, I know) I ordered what the system told me should have been on my 90 but twice it/I was wrong.

If they're greased regularly especially after wading they will last ages.
If you have a 2 " lift they will last a lot less though.
There's no set amount , but between 25,000 to 60,000 miles at a guess. 2002 td5 90 county hardtop

I put a cheap £6 jobby on, lasted 3 months (no off-road, just driving 12 mile round trip 5 days a week)

If you buy decent to start and regularly grease, it will last you a long time...

Ok so here's what we've got.

This is the transfer box end of the front propshaft with some very obvious play in the UJ

Closer inspection shows the bearings visible on one joint

But there's something suspicious about the other side of the joint. Am I imagining it or is there a gap that shouldn't be there, and no bearings where there should be?

In the meantime, I have engaged diff lock so my GF has an somewhat unusual RWD 90 Shocked But the birds nest has disappeared Thumbs Up Mid Life; Live It!
